12 Turystyczna Street in Gdańsk: a former inn is set to regain its former glory

On Sobieszewska Island, a building dating back to the days of the former Bohnsack seaside resort has survived. Before the war, the ‘Stadt Danzig’ guesthouse operated at 12 Turystyczna Street. The building is now set to undergo a major refurbishment carried out by Gdańsk Real Estate.

Turystyczna 12 and its history

The building at 12 Turystyczna Street was built in the 19th century as a wooden inn, linked to the developing Bohnsack spa resort, now known as Sobieszewo. Before the war, the “Stadt Danzig” Gasthaus – an inn named after the City of Gdańsk – operated here. Over time, a brick section was added to the wooden structure, and around 1930 the whole building was modernised and rebuilt in brick. The present-day building therefore dates from the interwar period, but its history began much earlier. At that time, Bohnsack was a popular holiday destination for the residents of Gdańsk. Guesthouses, restaurants and hotels operated here. In 1906, the Kurhaus, or Spa House, was built on the Martwa Wisła, and the town developed as a seaside resort on the Baltic coast. After 1945, the building underwent several alterations, during which it lost, amongst other things, its wooden veranda on the ground floor, whilst some of the windows and doors either disappeared or were resized.

Gdańsk Real Estate is renovating the listed building

Today, 12 Turystyczna Street is a multi-family residential building, which remains in the city’s housing stock. Gdańsk Real Estate has drawn up a plan for its complete renovation as part of a programme for the energy-efficiency modernisation of buildings under the conservation officer’s protection. The tender for the works was announced in April 2026. The scope of the works is extensive. It includes refurbishment of the façade, installation of insulation, work on the walls, replacement of window and door frames, and modernisation of the roof. The works will also cover the timber ceilings, stairs and stairwell, as well as the restoration of some of the bricked-up window openings, which should restore the façades to an appearance more faithful to the original. The documentation also mentions filling gaps in the brick walls and repairing cracks in them. The project aims to improve the building’s structural condition whilst preserving its historical authenticity.

Turystyczna 12 will regain its lost splendour

The renovation will also extend to the immediate surroundings of the historic house. A tin garage and a wooden outbuilding, formerly associated with a grocery shop, are to be removed from the site adjacent to the building. The works will also include landscaping, new pavements, lighting, benches and planting. Gdańskie Nieruchomości has just signed a contract with the contractor for the renovation works.
