Carlo Ratti Associati (CRA) has created an innovative project, the Quisimangia Canteen, for Mutti, a leader in tomato preserves. Located in Montechiarugolo, in the heart of Italy’s Food Valley, or Emilia-Romagna region, the space combines natural surroundings with modern design. The project is the next stage in the collaboration between CRA and Mutti, which includes the development of the plan for the new factory and the famous residence ‘The Greenary’.
Innovative architecture in harmony with nature
The Quisimangia Canteen has a green roof made of compressed earth and is slightly sunken below the surface of the ground, giving visitors the impression of eating at meadow level. This unique and exceptional structure resembles raised earth turf and covers an area of 1,200sqm, of which the dining room itself occupies 500sqm.
Exquisite cuisine in the daily canteen
ViCook, the catering company of brothers Chicco and Bobo Cerea, known for their Michelin-starred Da Vittorio restaurants in Bergamo, St. Moritz and Shanghai, is responsible for running Quisimangia. The canteen will serve both Mutti’s employees and external guests, offering a menu of the highest quality.
Design inspired by nature
Adjacent to the canteen is a 1.1 hectare garden, designed by Paolo Pejrone, an award-winning Italian landscape architect. The design refers to an 18th-century French concept, creating the illusion of a barrier-free space. Visitors have the impression of being immersed in nature, despite the subtle divisions of the space.
Quisimangia canteen – ecologicalinnovation and sustainability
The canteen reflects the principles of the circular economy. One of its most unique features is a floor made from recycled tomato skins, which was created from more than 3 tonnes of Mutti’s production waste. In addition, the facility is equipped with modern energy-saving technologies, minimising the environmental impact.
Combining nature and technology
Quisimangia is a unique combination of modern architecture, ecological innovation and exquisite cuisine. This project confirms that it is possible to create a space that is both functional and inspiring, combining everyday work with the harmony of nature and the culinary arts.
