A café in a century-old building. The old brickwork is a real bonus here!

In Wołczkowo, near Szczecin, a building over a century old has been restored and converted into an intimate café combined with a pizzeria and a separate children’s area. The conversion of the building required both comprehensive technical modernisation and the creation of a well-thought-out interior concept capable of meeting the expectations of various user groups. The designers treated the historic structure as an asset, using its original features to create a contemporary character for the space. The interior was designed by Justyna Jakubowska from the NAPZ studio.

The most significant discovery turned out to be the superbly preserved Klein ceiling. Its structure became the compositional axis of the entire scheme, and the arch motif derived from its form recurs in the metalwork and finishing details. It is this element that gives the interior a distinctive identity, combining tradition with a modern approach to design.

Great importance was attached to the entrance area. The foyer was designed to create the impression of a refined space from the very first step. Its form and choice of materials were also carefully considered with social media presence in mind, which today constitutes a key element of the strategy for venues focused on engaging with the local community and visitors from outside the region.

The café’s interior is based on a combination of varied textures and materials. Subtle contrasts, carefully selected lighting and refined details create an atmosphere conducive to a longer stay. In the toilets, it was decided to completely redesign the space. One of them is adorned with wallpaper chosen to harmonise with the café’s aesthetic whilst meeting the functional requirements typical of such spaces.

An important part of the project is the children’s area, separated from the café section by a long corridor. This ensures that the main room remains peaceful, whilst the play area can operate independently. Within this area, two birthday rooms and toilets have been designed. The whole space is kept in a light colour palette, complemented by delicate patterns and subtle accents, which create a comfortable environment for the little ones. The toilets feature colourful ceilings and wallpaper with a squirrel motif. The same motif appears in the decorative lamps in the birthday rooms, reinforcing the visual cohesion of this part of the venue.

The result is a space where the building’s historic fabric harmonises with contemporary design standards. A functional, welcoming space has been created, with meticulous attention to detail, and its character stems from the skilful combination of the existing architecture with new solutions.
