A colourful penthouse in Berlin. The interior was designed by Studio Bosko

A colourful penthouse designed by Studio Bosko was created in one of the new housing developments in Berlin. The authors joined the entire process of creating the flat already at the stage of purchasing the property in development condition, before the pandemic started. The unit in the attic of one plomb in Kreuzberg belongs to a young couple with international experience who moved to Berlin from Amsterdam. The clients were keen to create an everyday living space devoid of neutrality and lack of character. Together with the designers, they came up with an interior concept based on expressive colours, where colour became the main tool for dividing functions.

A space divided by colour

One of the important principles of the project was the introduction of strong colour accents. This was influenced, among other things, by the specific colour perception of one of the owners, who only sees intense colours. As a result, the kitchen was kept in yellow, the dining room was dominated by shades of red, and the living room was filled with green. The private space has been arranged in a calmer, more atmospheric style. Colour plays both an aesthetic and organisational role here, delineating functional zones in the open-plan layout of the flat.

Penthouse in Berlin – process and collaboration

Design work began shortly after the founding of Studio Bosko, when the investors contacted its founder Kasia Kronberger via the website. After initial discussions, the three of them decided to work together. The flat was still under construction at the time. The insulation and windows were ready, but the partition walls and floors were missing. Thanks to the cooperation with the developer, it was possible to leave the structural steel beams visible, which became an integral part of the design. The designers first determined the functional layout of the interior and then moved on to its arrangement.

Selection of furniture and styling

The furnishings of the flat were designed with great attention to detail. Studio Bosko prepared original solutions and selected furniture combining design classics with vintage and contemporary elements from various European countries. The interior was created with the users’ individual needs and aesthetic preferences in mind. The illustrator, who works with intense colours on a daily basis, dreamt of a distinctive yellow background in the kitchen. This motif became the starting point for designing the entire area in this particular tone.

Penthouse in Berlin during the pandemic

The realisation took about two and a half years. The long time needed to complete the project was a result of both the complexity of the tasks and the constraints of the pandemic. It involved all stages of the work: from the architectural concept and choice of materials, to the lighting design and the final styling of the interior. The result was a coherent, functional and aesthetically expressive living space that fully met the owners’ expectations.
