A contemporary weekend home. One like this has been created in Australia

Marraweeney is a weekend home located in the rural countryside of the state of Victoria, Australia. It was designed by Tom Robertson Architects as a tranquil retreat that fits well into the open landscape without the need to dominate the idyllic surroundings. Its form remains restrained and its presence on the hill is felt through its proportions and relationship to the site.

A weekend home in the countryside

The plot on the highest point of the hill ridge was chosen for its wide panoramic views. The design of the house was subordinated to the views, avoiding the effect of being visually overwhelmed. The low roofline gives the building a horizontal layout and brings it optically closer to the ground. The building rests on a stepped-back plinth, allowing the native grasses to grow freely in the area below and giving the impression of being slightly raised above the ground.

A play of light and rhythm

The simple, elongated silhouette of the house becomes a backdrop for the changing light. The afternoon sun moves across the façade, while the shadows drawn by the repetitive arrangement of columns introduce a calm rhythm. Their spacing has been planned so that nothing distracts from the landscape visible from the interiors.

Minimalist interiors full of elegance

The set of materials used was limited to a few expressive elements. On the outside, the house is finished with tan wood and dark steel details that contrast with the light, waving grasses. In the interiors, an economical aesthetic was consistently maintained. Cool, polished concrete floors flow seamlessly onto the terraces, while warmth is introduced by the eucalyptus veneer cladding used in the kitchen and bathroom.

Veranda and functional layout of the house

A full-length veranda 1.8 metres deep has been designed along the main living area and bedrooms. This element draws on the local country house tradition, provides protection from the sun and creates a natural extension of the outdoor living space. Completing the design is a separate guest pavilion that allows more people to stay together while maintaining privacy.

A weekend home in harmony with nature

The house was planned as a grid-independent facility. An extensive photovoltaic installation with energy storage is responsible for the power supply, and the carefully designed insulation, including the space under the foundation slab, promotes stable thermal conditions throughout the year.

A contemporary interpretation of the country house

Marraweeney deviates from the stereotypical image of a rural residence in this part of Australia. It is a place conducive to slowing down, socialising and contemplating the open landscape. The architecture does not impose itself in form, but creates a framework for experiencing the landscape and everyday life outside the city.
