A counter that plays first fiddle. The furniture was designed by Karol Budziszewski

The counter design for the Cyrk restaurant in Poznań, located at 14a Młyńska Street, was developed by Karol Budziszewski of Karol Budziszewski Studio. The furniture was conceived as a key element of the restaurant’s interior design. From the very entrance, the counter catches the eye with its bold, sculptural form and play of reflections. It is not only a functional piece of equipment, but also a spatial manifesto that sets the tone for the entire restaurant.

The starting point for Budziszewski’s design was the zebra – a dynamic and graphic motif that brings rhythm and tension. The distinctive form of the counter, based on soft lines and curves, brings an impression of lightness and optical fluidity to the interior of the establishment. In his work, the designer chose to use Alpi Sottsass Grey veneer, which combines the structure of natural wood with a cool grey palette. This material fulfils both an aesthetic and practical function, offering durability and resistance to intensive use.

The counter was designed with the realities of a catering operation in mind. Its interior conceals an extensive arrangement of shelves and drawers, providing convenient access to essential equipment. The counter top is made of plastic imitating steel, which emphasises the industrial character of the arrangement and is highly resistant to damage. The electrical and water installations have been concealed within the structure, which keeps things tidy and does not interfere with the staff’s work. The front part of the counter has been enhanced with mirrored surfaces and steel details. The light reflections created on these elements deepen the space and introduce an extra dimension to the interior. These solutions play an aesthetic as well as a functional role, influencing the perception of the space by guests and emphasising the modern character of the restaurant.

The realisation of the furniture design was the result of close cooperation between the designer and the investor. Already at the stage of the first meetings, their joint vision emerged, which led to the creation of an element constituting the identity of the place. The counter is not just a part of the furnishings, but the key and dominant point of this interior. The rest of the arrangement of the Circus is a direct development of this idea. The blue bench with its organic form, set on spherical bases, refers to the elements used at the counter. Attention is also drawn to the ceiling, covered with stripes reminiscent of a circus tent, which introduces an atmosphere of theatrical suspension. The juxtaposition of steel, glass and wood creates an expressive but well-balanced whole.

The overall design works like a stage set in which each element has a role to play, and the common aesthetic and precisely thought-out details build a coherent and recognisable narrative.
