A facade full of expression. A house like this was built in India

Indian contemporary architecture is increasingly setting new design directions, responding to the needs of residents in large metropolises while creating spaces full of light and greenery. A good example is the recent development of the Bhurat Residence in the city of Bangalore by Cadence Architects. It is a home designed to redefine family life in a dense urban fabric.

Completed a few months ago, Cadence Architects’ project responds to the investors’ desire to live surrounded by nature, despite the constraints of locating their property in the centre of a dense Indian city. Here, the architects have combined sculptural expression with a functional layout of spaces, creating a building that simultaneously stands out in the urban landscape and remains closely connected to nature.

The façade of the house, with its soft, curved forms, creates a play of light and shadow, and its layout allowed for the separation of the inner garden, which the owners wanted so much. The greenery introduced at various levels of the building has become an integral part of its architecture. The garden improves the microclimate, filters the air and light, while providing residents with direct contact with nature in the middle of a large city.

The layout of the house has been subordinated to light and space. The front terrace, separated from the main body, acts as a transition zone that lets the sun into the interior and creates a semi-open space for relaxation. This treatment gives the living area more lightness and the house opens up to the surroundings.

The building’s interiors are designed for seamless transitions between the living, dining and private areas. Large glazings frame views of the gardens and ensure that natural light accompanies the residents throughout the day. The limited palette of materials used gives the whole building a cohesive and warm character, while a two-storey atrium in the form of an internal courtyard spatially links the storeys and introduces additional openness.

The materials used in the design played an important role in creating the identity of the house. Thin-wall reinforced concrete (ferrocement) was used to create a light, dynamic façade. The courtyard is finished in terrazzo with marble inserts that flow seamlessly onto the terrace, creating a coherent connection between the interior and the surroundings through large glazing.

Bhurat Residence is a modern architecture that, even in a country as unremarkable as India, manages to respond to the needs of modern families while combining a densely built-up city with an oasis of nature.
