Architect Zuza Wysoczyńska has designed a family home in the Ogrody district of Poznań. Within 56 square metres, she has accommodated the lives of four family members who decided to see what everyday life is like closer to the city centre. The interior was designed to meet the needs of the parents and their teenage children, offering comfort, ample storage space and a relaxing atmosphere.
Moving from a house located about 60 km from Poznań to a flat just 5 km from the city centre was a conscious lifestyle change. The family was looking for easier access to amenities, schools and urban infrastructure. However, the small floor area required a clever redesign of the original layout proposed by the developer. The priority for the owner of the wysoczynska.studio design studio was to create an interior that facilitates daily life for four people and ensures everyone has at least a little privacy.
The kitchen plays the most important role in Zuza’s design – it is the heart of the home, around which the household’s life revolves. The room has been enlarged and fitted with a peninsula separating the entrance area from the living area. This has provided additional storage space, a section of a wardrobe and another worktop. The entire flat is dominated by calm colours, natural materials and balanced proportions. Oak veneer, linen curtains, textured wallpaper and etched glass in the kitchen units create a welcoming backdrop for the family’s daily life. In the living room, the solid wood furniture by PASTFORM and the table by NG DESIGN catch the eye.

Great importance was attached to the bespoke joinery. It features in the kitchen, living room and bathroom, helping to make use of every available centimetre without visually overwhelming the interior. Doors have been concealed within the furniture units, whilst additional cupboards above them have increased storage capacity. As a result, the flat retains its aesthetic appeal even with very heavy use.
An interesting example of Zuza Wysoczyńska’s functional approach is the bathroom. In a small space, she has managed to fit a washing machine, a tumble dryer, a laundry basket and space for toiletries. The veneered vanity unit beneath the washbasin, with its grooved front, introduces a subtle texture, whilst the irregular blue tiles in the shower react intriguingly to the light. The ambience of the interior is further enhanced by a backlit mirror. Thanks to this, the bathroom has an atmosphere reminiscent of an intimate relaxation zone. From the outset, the design was intended to be flexible and ready to adapt to the changing needs of the residents. The family home served its occupants for a long time and worked perfectly for them. Now it is ready for a new chapter and new tenants.
