A flat bursting with colour. Retro, concrete and Polish design take centre stage here

An 89-metre flat, full of colour and contrasts, has been created in Wrocław. The interior design took several years to complete, with many decisions made whilst the block was still under construction. This resulted in a concept with a highly personalised style, closely tailored to the residents. Angelika Fedorczuk from the JASNO studio is behind the project.

The owners approached Angelika Fedorczuk of the JASNO studio in autumn 2021, with nothing more than a floor plan of their future flat. Even then, however, it was clear that the interior would be unusual. Many of the rooms featured curved walls and angles other than right angles. Rather than treating these as a problem, the designer, together with the clients, decided to make the most of these unique features. The early stage of the work also allowed for the introduction of changes by the developer. One of the most important decisions was to leave the raw, concrete ceilings exposed – visible cables were routed along their surface.

The owners knew from the outset that they wanted their home to have a retro feel. Large windows with dark frames and the aforementioned concrete ceiling naturally steered the design towards a loft-style aesthetic. Each room was given its own dominant colour, whilst black details and metal were paired with soft fabrics and decorations. The heart of the flat is the living room with its kitchen. Here, three elements were certain from the outset: a lamp by Pani Jurek, a Wood Republic sofa and two-tone fitted kitchen units. After a long search, a mustard shade was chosen for the cabinet fronts, which also features on the living room wall. The colour of the kitchen island echoes that of the sofa, whilst the loft-style atmosphere is emphasised by the bookcase and the metal structure above the island.

In the bedroom, concrete has been combined with plenty of fabrics. The wardrobe has been concealed behind a curtain, whilst the two-tone velour headboard serves as a lovely accent here. Its shape is echoed on the wall, creating a distinctive backdrop for the bed. The room also features plaster walls, a concrete ceiling and small vintage-style wooden bedside tables. Colour is still present, but it has been used with greater subtlety. After all, a bedroom is meant to encourage rest. The children’s room has a completely different atmosphere. It is a more boho-style interior reminiscent of an urban jungle, with striking wallpaper, colourful accents, a hanging swing and a wardrobe decorated with geometric patterns. The owners’ daughter played a major role in deciding its look, whilst the designer’s task was to ensure consistency with the rest of the flat.

Each of the bathrooms here has its own distinctive feature. In this one, which has a shower, it’s the green washbasin, blue tiles and veneer in an unusual colour. Together, they create a bold yet successful composition. The bathroom with a bath was given an even more personalised touch. The designer drew inspiration from a pattern found on wallpaper, but didn’t want to put it above the bath. During a visit to the building site, she picked up a paintbrush herself and painted the pattern onto the wall. The contractor later sealed it appropriately. This is how a hand-painted detail came into being – one that cannot be found in any catalogue. The entire project developed gradually, as the owners and the designer made decisions along the way. The result? A colourful, relaxed interior where concrete, retro, loft and Polish design coexist in harmony, creating an interesting backdrop for the household’s everyday life.
