A 120-metre flat with a 30-metre terrace has been created in the Puerta del Ángel district of Madrid. This theatrical and full of surprises interior was designed by Emiliano Domingo Bárcena of the Bardo studio. From the outset, his concept was based on the idea of discovering successive rooms, transforming everyday life into a sequence of spatial surprises.
A theatrical interior as a backdrop to everyday life
The client wanted clearly defined rooms to ensure privacy in the different areas of the flat. In his design, the architect made use of the internal patio, which allowed for a continuous circulation route around the entire property. Instead of an open-plan layout, a sequence of rooms was created, revealing themselves gradually as one moves through the house. This narrative is further enhanced by very bold colours, varied materials and striking forms. A technical constraint was transformed into the strongest element of the composition. The existing column and beam were clad in neon-coloured methacrylate, which diffuses light, creates reflections and semi-transparent layers, subtly marking the boundary between the living room and the bedroom.
Colour, art and design in the flat
In the dining area, the curved wall finished with lacquered MDF panels in a deep aubergine shade is particularly striking. It provides a backdrop for the ‘Steel and Leather’ chairs by Katavolos, Kelley and Littell, the P376 KF2 lamp by &Tradition, and a sculptural lamp from the TUNING collection designed by the duo REPARTO and Jesús Meseguer. By the entrance stands the Nourage coffee table designed by the Bouroullec brothers for Vitra, a Frama 9.5° chair and a painting by Alejandro Jabaloyas. The living room is furnished with a Westwing sofa, an Ekstrem armchair by Terje Ekstrøm, side tables from Rue Vintage, decorative sculptures by Ethnicraft, and works by Fuensanta Sobejano and Miju Lee. The whole creates an atmosphere reminiscent of a carefully curated art gallery.
The kitchen and private area of the flat
The kitchen offers a fresh take on a traditional interior. White tiles contrast with the deep blue fitted units, whilst the stone worktop with its undulating line lends the space an almost sculptural quality. The furnishings are complemented by Revolver bar stools by HAY, Aldo Rossi’s Il Conico kettle for Alessi, vases by HAY and &Tradition, and the GIGI No. 3 lamp. Next to this is a workspace featuring a JFK desk by NORR11, a Gira lamp from Santa & Cole, and another painting by Fuensanta Sobejano. The bedroom, meanwhile, features a glass sculpture by Día Muñoz, a painting by Raúl Galán, a Panthella lamp by Louis Poulsen and the Collect tableware set from &Tradition.
A theatrical interior and spatial narratives
Each of the two bathrooms in the flat has been treated differently. This guest bathroom catches the eye with its soft lines, delicate mosaic and striking colour scheme, whilst its furnishings are complemented by a Fish Design table by Gaetano Pesce. The private bathroom, on the other hand, is dominated by muted colours, uniform surfaces and the Backenzahn e15 stool designed by Philipp Mainzer. A spacious terrace serves as a natural extension of the flat, featuring Kauani fabric pendant lights, a Balcony armchair by HAY, a Geometric Colour table by Ethnicraft and the iconic Cestita lamp by Santa & Cole. The greenery and warm palette of materials lend a calming quality to Emiliano Domingo Bárcena’s composition, bringing to a close a sequence of spaces designed as a coherent, emotionally charged narrative of an extremely contemporary lifestyle.

The Bardo studio was founded in 2021 on the initiative of architect Emiliano Domingo Bárcena, a graduate of the Technical University of Madrid (UPM). The studio specialises in architecture, interior design and furniture design, focusing on geometric forms, refined details and an individual approach to each project. Another key aspect of the team’s work is close supervision of project implementation and attention to the quality of workmanship at every stage of the process.
