Studio COSMO redesigned a flat of a 1930s tenement house located in one of the districts of Prague. The renovation included the reconstruction of the interior layout, the replacement of floors and the restoration of historic windows and doors. Throughout the process, the architects were guided by the original aesthetics of the space when choosing materials and colours. Elements such as white lacquered doors and windows decorated with brass handles, as well as the distinctive oak parquet flooring, provided inspiration.
By taking down all partition walls and leaving only the load-bearing walls, a spacious corridor was created that serves as the centrepiece of the flat rather than just a circulation space. Guests are greeted by a striking green vestibule with a circular mirror, which serves as the entrance to the flat. Behind it is a specially designed bookcase, offering plenty of space for books and personal items.
The architects chose to combine the original narrow rooms on the street side into one expansive living room, achieved by using a wide opening. Here, the white kitchen integrates seamlessly with the rest of the room, and the free-standing furniture harmonises with the oak floors. A custom-made solid oak table provides a focal point and completes the space. The living room has access to a balcony facing the street and is decorated with a large, captivating painting.
The bathroom exudes a spa-like atmosphere, with intricate tiles and rounded corners. The choice of mosaic created with circular tiles and other finishing touches refers to the modernist character of the townhouse. Attention to detail is evident in the brass accessories, concrete slab niches and subtle lighting.
In the bedroom, the focus was on simple and clean design. A spacious wardrobe conceals a discreet workspace, while sliding doors reveal a vibrant niche that can be closed at night, providing a quiet place to sleep. There is also access to a private bathroom from the bedroom. The flat in a townhouse built in the spirit of modernism perfectly captures the spirit and style of the historic building.
