An apartment in a 1950s block of flats in Prague’s Holešovice district has undergone a complete renovation, transforming its former cramped layout into an open space tailored to the needs of a young family. The B² Architecture studio based its design on three colours: green, blue and pink, used to clearly divide the individual functions.
A flat in a 1950s block of flats revisited
The starting point for the renovation was the large area and the skeleton structure of the building, which allowed for far-reaching changes. Most of the partition walls were removed, revealing a system of columns and beams, which was incorporated into the new interior design. The central part of the flat is now occupied by a compact green-coloured structure housing a wardrobe, toilet and bathroom. The daily activities of the household are organised around it. The living area opens onto the adjacent square and views of the city, while the bedroom and children’s room face a quiet, intimate courtyard.

Three colours organise the interior
The colour scheme plays a role in clearly dividing the space. The green core marks the centre of the flat, while the blue fittings in the study and library accentuate the work and storage areas. Glass partitions have made it possible to separate the home office without losing access to daylight. White custom-made furniture provides plenty of storage space and conceals an additional wardrobe, keeping the open space looking tidy. The whole is complemented by subtle pink accents that emphasise the palette of three main colours.
A flat in a 1950s block of flats and materials
The choice of materials refers to the character of the building’s construction. Raw concrete is combined here with cement screeds, classic herringbone oak flooring and expressive colour planes. The original ceiling beams have been levelled with a layer of cement to visually unify them and optically raise the low ceilings. The kitchen features compact laminate worktops and reinforced glass partitions. The composition by B² Architecture is complemented by copper details in the fittings, door handles and original lamps. The bathroom is also noteworthy, finished with two colours of tiles and evoking the aesthetics of the 1950s.
