The flat at Żeromskiego Street in Gdynia is an example of a skilful combination of tradition and modern influences. On an area of 48 square metres, it has been possible to create a space which, on the one hand, emphasises the modernist heritage of the city and, on the other, alludes to vintage style and mid-century aesthetics. The arrangement attracts attention with a subtle play of contrasts, elegant details and carefully selected materials. Aleksandra Sowa of ASID Studio has created here a friendly, comfortable and aesthetically coherent space, at the same time full of character and references to the city’s history.
Flat in Gdynia – inspirations and project assumptions
The flat was designed as a holiday flat for the investors, who placed a great deal of trust in the designer from the outset. Thanks to this, the creative process proceeded freely and the arrangement could be created without compromising the aesthetic vision. The key here was to refer to the modernist architecture of Gdynia and to enrich the interior with vintage elements. The concept was inspired by the marble mosaic maintained in shades of beige and burgundy and the characteristic butter colour, which became the leitmotif for the entire project.
Colours, materials and contrasts
The colour palette of the flat is based on calm, neutral tones, which have been varied with intense burgundy and the shine of copper accessories. A veneer with a distinctive texture also plays an important role, giving the furniture depth and refinement. Natural wood and soft upholstery fabrics, meanwhile, introduce cosiness and balance, while chrome details emphasise the modern character of the arrangement. A special place is the kitchen, whose organic, rounded cabinetry is reminiscent of the 1960s and space age aesthetics. Its forms are juxtaposed with delicate buttery tones and glossy handles, creating a striking contrast and at the same time a coherent composition.

Flat in Gdynia – lighting and accessories
Carefully chosen lighting emphasises the personal character of the interior and is one of its most original elements. The bedroom features the Space Age Discus wall lamp by Charlotte Perriand, made of silver-coloured aluminium. The kitchen area features a chrome wall lamp by Motoko Ishii, while above the table there is a Lyskaer aluminium lamp by Bent Nordsted. These all date from the 1970s and represent mid-century vintage styling. The arrangement is complemented by custom-painted paintings, which were inspired by the art of the 1960s, as well as decorative accessories that introduce an individual touch.
