Apartament na Powiślu

A flat in the Powiśle district. It is a project by Mat Kubaj Studio

A flat of almost 160 sqm has been created in Warsaw’s Powiśle district. The interior, designed by Mat Kubaj Studio, is located opposite the gardens of the University Library and offers a view of the city skyline and the Royal Castle. The project is a fusion of contemporary design, art and craftsmanship in a space that is equally representative and private.

The living room is housed in a conservatory with a glass ceiling, which allows natural light to flow in and creates a unique atmosphere in the room. The space is complemented by exotic vegetation, including date palms and royal strelitzia. The focal point of the orangery is a spacious sofa designed by Piotr Kuchciński for the Noti brand, upholstered with a distinctively structured fabric. The interior is warmed by linen curtains and textiles, as well as the artistic ‘Drive’ carpet, handwoven from wool and silk. It is a unique element of the ‘Designed by ART – Art on Carpet’ collection, in which Mat Kubaj’s paintings find new life on limited edition collector’s carpets. Corresponding with the carpet are vintage ceramic vases of the “Siwaki” type from the 1960s. A round Serif table is set with Nagel Stoff candlesticks, and the space is illuminated by designer lamps, including the ‘Taccia’ model by FLOS and a black and white floor lamp in a graphic style. In the corner of the living room, a lounge area is planned with an armchair and footstool “Ronin”, also by Piotr Kuchciński. The whole is complemented by a monumental vase with an organic form, handmade in India and imported by the Warsaw-based Thymka Studio.

In the hallway, the attention is drawn to the brass sculpture entitled ‘Soul’, by Karol Wycisek. Set on a pedestal, surrounded by mirrors and enhanced by the play of reflections, it creates a profound and surreal effect. The central dominant feature of this interior is a column clad in patinated brass, developed by Matchez Studio. A blackened wood corner bookcase and an abstract painting by Mat Kubaj, which is in dialogue with a hand-painted vintage vase from Pruszkow, are placed next to it. The wall is adorned with collectible sconces made of brass, designed especially for the flat. Below was a fireplace made of grey marble, inspired by American modernism. Adjacent to it was placed the iconic ‘Ota Otanek’ chair by Borek Sipeka for Vitra, an object exhibited at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and imported from a foreign design auction.

A massive walnut wood table takes centre stage in the dining room. It is accompanied by a ‘Medusa’ vase by 101 Copenhagen with an ikebana composition and a stone bowl from Thymka Studio. Above the table, metal lamps “Spokes” by Foscarini are suspended, while the Wishbone Chair by Hans J. Wegner and the minimalist Betty TK4 bench by &Tradition are arranged around the table. The kitchen is decorated with natural oak fronts and white stone worktops. The character of the arrangement is complemented by black hockers and elements with a geometric expression. The bedroom is maintained in a calm, calming atmosphere. The interior is warmed by linen wallpaper and textiles, as well as a custom-made bed with a high, soft headboard. Above the bed is the FLOS “Ariette” lamp, whose size and diffused light create an intimate atmosphere.

By the bed stood the collector’s “Glass Pyramid” lamp in Murano glass from the early 1980s, designed by Lino Tagliapietra. The walls are adorned with prints by Mata Kubaj, and the blackened wood wardrobe built-in introduces an element of Japanese minimalism. A dressing table upholstered with mirrors has been arranged in the corner of the room, above which hang chrome ‘Missaliance Solid Wall’ sconces by Lexavala.
