A flat in Warsaw’s Wola district. This is what it looks like after renovation

An interior designed in this way breaks the mould. Its design was prepared by architects from the Estimental studio, who rebuilt the space, taking inspiration from elements of the aesthetics of the famous Memphis Group. The flat in Warsaw’s Wola district gained a new functional layout, making it better suited to the needs of a family of four.

The flat in Warsaw’s Wola has undergone a major refurbishment, which included a change to the functional layout. At its heart was a spacious living area with an open kitchen, which gained additional lighting thanks to a study separated by a horizontal window made of milky, corrugated glass. The separation of the dining annex allowed a coherent yet flexible living space to be created, ready for different everyday scenarios.

The private part of the flat, located deeper into the premises, includes the parents’ bedroom, the children’s rooms and the bathroom. The premises are complemented by a functional utility room at the entrance, ideal for storing smaller and larger items used occasionally by the tenants.

Italian inspiration

The designers at Estimental drew inspiration from the Memphis style, introducing geometric forms and intense colours to the interior. Colour harmoniously emphasises the division into different functional areas. This approach was also reflected in the choice of furniture. Most of them are unique acquisitions of the investors, found at online auctions and local fairs. Exceptional objects include the ‘Uri’ stool designed by Pera Ivar Ledang for Ikea in 1995, or the ‘Ry’ table by Tord Björklund from 1989. The table’s original glass top, covered with reflective foil, gives it a postmodern feel. The custom-made furniture cabinets have been adapted to Ikea’s storage systems, allowing for flexible future expansion. The spacious hallway wardrobe also housed the owners’ impressive collection of sneakers, while the black and white patterns on the corners of the furniture subtly reference the living room carpet.

Living room the centre of life

The living room of this flat serves a multiple function – it is not only a living space, but also a home art gallery. On the walls you can admire posters by Dutch artist Parry, next to which a bouquet of flowers from the limited LEGO collection is displayed, complemented by unique stained glass tableware. In a few moments, the living room is transformed into a private cinema room: a large projector screen unfolds from the ceiling, above the main window, providing an almost cinematic experience.

The colours used in the design have been carefully considered to create a harmonious yet dynamic whole. The coral hue in the dining area, combined with the abundance of natural light, builds a soothing atmosphere and gives the interior a subtle rose hue. The Peach Fuzz bathroom, on the other hand, makes you feel like you are on the beach – as soon as you leave the dark, atmospheric bathing area, you enter a bright, warm space that envelops you in colour and energy.

Memphis Group influences

The aesthetic inspiration of the design refers to the Italian Memphis Group, a collective of designers that revolutionised the approach to design in the 1980s. The Memphis Group, founded by Ettore Sottsassa, was distinguished by bold geometric forms, contrasting colours and elements that broke traditional norms. Their designs, full of humour, irony and aesthetic experimentation, became a permanent part of design history, inspiring successive generations of creators. Traces of this spiritual legacy can be seen in the current Estimental design, where intense colours and geometric details are used in moderation – as an accent and without dominating the whole.
