An 80-square-metre flat in one of Katowice’s new housing estates has been transformed into a space designed from scratch for a family of three – with a focus on everyday comfort, spending time together and a clear division into private zones. Olga Jagoda from the SOJ studio decided to undertake a far-reaching reorganisation of the functional layout, moving partition walls and redefining the way the residents use the flat. Thanks to the clients’ trust, it was possible to implement changes that not only organised the space but also gave it a new, cohesive character.
The heart of family life
A key aim of the project was to create an open-plan communal area connecting the living room with the kitchen. This is where daily life centres – a place for conversations, meals and get-togethers. A discreet passageway to the study was incorporated into the kitchen units, thereby preserving the flat’s full functional layout: the parents’ bedroom, their daughter’s room and a separate workspace. The open-plan living area has been designed to encourage socialising, whilst remaining organised and ergonomic.
The interior reflects the character and sensibilities of both clients. Minimalist, geometric forms and a precise composition draw on the world of technology, which is close to the heart of the client from the IT sector. Warm materials, bold colours and artistic accents reflect the passion of the other client – a doctor for whom design is a natural way of expressing emotions. This dual aesthetic has been translated into a consistent design language, in which every element has its place and meaning.
The beauty of wood
Natural veneer with a deep, elegant colouring features in the built-in furniture throughout the flat, creating a cohesive composition and a sense of harmony. It is accompanied by a light-coloured sintered material with subtle veining, whose colour scheme complements the wood, and striking tiles in the bathrooms. Their geometric patterns and warm colour palette evoke the aesthetics of the 1960s and 1970s, providing a decorative accent with a distinctive character.
Colour accents
The minimalist base is broken up by the rounded details of the furniture and carefully chosen colours – navy blue surfaces, brick-red accessories and sculptural lighting. This approach lends the interior a sense of lightness and individual character, whilst retaining its elegance and timelessness. The design of this flat in Katowice demonstrates how modern minimalism can coexist with the emotional depth of materials and details, creating a space tailored to the lifestyle of its residents.
