Gdańsk is a city with an extremely rich history, where historic architecture is an integral part of the landscape. One important element of this heritage is the eclectic tenement house standing at Biskupia 27 on Biskupia Górka. the 125-year-old building has undergone extensive renovation, thanks to which it has regained its former splendour and functionality. The investment was carried out by Gdanskie Nieruchomości as part of the ‘Revitalisation of Biskupia Górka Starego Chełm’ programme, co-financed by the Pomeranian Voivodeship’s Regional Operational Programme 2014-2020. The work began in December 2022 and was completed in January 2025 at a cost of more than PLN 4.38 million.
The eclectic townhouse, built in 1900, is listed on the Municipal Register of Historic Places. This entry required a unique approach to the entire development. The building houses eight residential units, which, thanks to extensive works, have been given a modern standard while retaining the original character of the building.
The refurbishment included a wide range of construction and maintenance activities. Work began with horizontal and vertical insulation and a new foundation slab. Subsequently, all the ceilings were replaced with reinforced concrete, the plaster was restored and the roof was redone with wooden rafters. A key element was also the reconstruction of the historic staircase, which preserved the atmosphere of the historic building. In addition, the building was thermally modernised by insulating the roof, basement and external walls. The guttering, downpipes and flashings were also replaced, and the window and door woodwork was reconstructed according to the original design.
The renovation of the façade included the conservation of the facade and the restoration of the architectural details. The decorative elements, handmade from plaster, were custom-made. Comprehensive installation work and the modernisation of the telecommunications infrastructure were also carried out. Thanks to this investment, the building has regained its former splendour and residents can enjoy a comfortable environment in a historic space.
Biskupia 27 before and after renovation
The renovation of the tenement at Biskupia 27 is part of a wide-ranging effort to renew Biskupia Gorka, which has struggled for years with numerous problems. Its buildings are valuable in that they suffered relatively little damage in 1945, and many buildings from the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century have survived to this day. In addition, the specific topography and location make Biskupia Górka one of the most picturesque places in Gdańsk.
