Casa da Levada is a unique single-family house project by Tsou Arquitectos, which blends perfectly into the natural landscape of the Portuguese village of Paredes. Situated on the banks of the Tâmega River, it is an excellent example of architecture that harmoniously interacts with the surrounding nature. The design reflects the idea of a building derived from the very fabric of the land on which it is built. Both the form and functionality of the building have been subordinated to the natural context, making Casa da Levada an example of modern ecological architecture.
The location in the picturesque village of Paredes means that Casa da Levada fits perfectly into the landscape, creating a natural continuation of the site. The form of the house is closely linked to the topography of the area, providing a seamless visual and physical integration with the surroundings. The design is based on the idea of nature-inspired architecture, where the building appears to grow out of the ground and its structure harmonises with the surrounding landscape. Access to the house is provided by a cobbled path, which creates a clear line in the green landscape. A key element of the spatial composition is the division into two main zones: the social space and the private space. These two segments of the building are separated by a ‘tectonic gap’ that leads to a central courtyard. This courtyard is the heart of the house, around which the whole building develops. The space acts as a meeting place, and its open, horizontal canopies frame views of the surrounding nature, enhancing the feeling of closeness to nature.

Casa da Levada was designed with thermal comfort and energy efficiency in mind. The heating and cooling system is based on a water-based underfloor system powered by a heat pump. Ceramic floors facilitate rapid temperature control, ensuring optimal interior conditions all year round. In addition, the house incorporates a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery (CMV), which allows for efficient air exchange without significant energy loss. To maximise the benefits of natural lighting, the glazing is strategically positioned, with mechanical protection in the form of blinds and external shades to optimise the heat balance. In winter, they provide additional thermal gains, while in summer they minimise interior overheating.
The technologies and materials used are in line with the idea of sustainable construction. Of key importance is the use of natural and renewable materials, such as cork panels on the façade, which provide excellent thermal insulation and fit into the local ecological context. The vegetated roof is an extension of the natural landscaping, aiding water retention and improving the microclimate around the building. Another element indicative of the ecological approach to construction is the patio made of stone from the ruins on the site. The use of existing materials and their thoughtful arrangement has allowed waste to be minimised and raw materials to be reused, which fits in with the idea of a closed loop economy.

Casa da Levada is a project that combines a modern approach to architecture with respect for nature and building traditions. Its innovative approach to space design, energy efficiency and ecological solutions make it an example of modern construction adapted to contemporary requirements.
