High up in the Karkonosze Mountains, Chalet Na Kukačkách was built, designed by the Prague-based studio edit! architects. The mountain house references regional styles with its stone plinth and wooden façades, while offering a fresh take on spatial organisation. The exterior form remains calm and restrained, while the interior opens up to light and beautiful views.
A house in the mountains in a national park
The project was developed within the strict regulations applicable in the national park. The shape of the building, the gable roof and the choice of materials were predetermined by local guidelines. The architects therefore focused on what is often overlooked in similar projects, namely the quality of the interiors. Instead of dark, cramped rooms, they proposed a bright layout based on views and clear connections between the floors.
A house in the mountains with a classic shape
The traditional gables had to retain their classic proportions, so it was not possible to transform them by enlarging the windows. However, there was room for manoeuvre on the side elevations. This is where large-format glazing was installed in the living area and at the summer entrance, making the landscape an integral part of the residents’ everyday life. This concept is complemented by the vertical connection of the house’s spaces, i.e. the living room open up to the roof structure and the gallery on the first floor, which brings in light from several sides.

A structure adapted to the landscape
Construction on steep terrain and during a short building season required quick and precise solutions. The use of prefabricated CLT panels proved to be crucial. These elements, mounted on a reinforced concrete plinth, allowed the structure to be completed in a matter of weeks. They ensure high structural rigidity while allowing for large openings and smooth sequences. The panels supplied by 3AE had a visible finish, allowing the wooden surfaces to serve as the final interior wall cladding.
Chalet Na Kukačkách as an example of tailored architecture
Even within restrictive regulations, it is possible to create a comfortable, refined and nature-friendly home. Chalet Na Kukačkách is the best example of this. It is an option for those who seek peace and space in a mountainous environment, while at the same time expecting architecture that meets today’s living standards.
