The house is located adjacent to the Šumava National Park, one of the four largest national parks in the Czech Republic. It is a picturesque area near the border with Austria and Bavaria in Germany. The park was established in 1991 and it was in the midst of such beautiful views that a Czech family decided to live. Their house on the hill was built according to a design by the duo: Markéta Cajthamlová and Petra Pelešková.
Building a house on such a valuable landscape site meant that strict requirements had to be met regarding the shape of the building. To meet the legal requirements, the architects proposed building a house with a traditional shape. Its form was to harmonise with the landscape, enhancing the beauty of the green trees and uneven terrain. Nature can be viewed through the large windows.
The house on the hill is distinguished by its traditional regional style. In addition to its aesthetics, this is evidenced by the width of the building, its position parallel to the contours of the land, its minimalism, the absence of a fence, the projecting risalit and, finally, the gabled roof with a semicircle.
The building’s façade is decorated with traditional materials. Dark stained wood and local stone for the plinth, low retaining walls and terraces. The traditionally common green shutters were the inspiration for the full vents that complement the frameless windows. Black stained spruce boards correspond with the dark grey aluminium sheet roof.
The proposed building layout is similar to a country house. The back door and the utility room are located on the north side. The living room with a large fireplace and the main entrance were located to the south. The attic contains three bedrooms and a bathroom. The flooring in the interior is made of black slate (ground floor) and spruce on the ground floor. The house on the hill has underfloor heating, which is powered by a heat pump, but in winter the most important source of heat is the fireplace.
