A house with history and a modern spirit. The building stands in Portugal

The Moradia do Retiro project by Ricardo Azevedo Arquitecto presents a conscious approach to working with existing, historic architecture. The studio undertook the daunting task of transforming an old stone house into a space where traces of the past are still visible, but the building is fully adapted to modern standards. A house with history has become an oasis of modern solutions and elegance in every sense.

A house with history reinvented

Every project is rooted in a place and its memory. In this case, the inspiration came from the solid granite walls, whitewashed plaster and the simple roof covered with traditional tiles. These elements were preserved and restored, furthermore reproducing the original proportions of the openings and window frames, which restored the building’s former charm. At the same time, the new concept, with the addition of a new section facing the garden, allowed the interiors to open up to the surroundings, bringing in more light and creating a sense of continuity between the house and the private garden with swimming pool.

A new dimension of space from Ricardo Azevedo

Ricardo Azevedo decided to reinterpret the interiors of the building. Thick stone walls were juxtaposed with smooth concrete and natural wood surfaces. Contemporary details such as thin metal door frames, minimalist lighting and simple furniture create a contrast to the texture of the stone while emphasising its durability and beauty. The colour scheme is kept in neutral tones to highlight the materials and the natural light penetrating through the large glazing. The central part of the house is the spacious living area with an open-plan kitchen, dining room and living room. It is a place where the boundaries between inside and outside become seamless thanks to wide windows and doors leading to the terrace. The bedrooms and private rooms are arranged in a more intimate part of the building.

Dom z historią

A house with history full of comfort and simplicity

The Moradia do Retiro project uses solutions that are conducive to everyday living and provide a high level of comfort. All installations have been hidden in the walls, ceilings and floors of the building, thus preserving its elegance and spirit of history. Lighting was designed to emphasise the texture of the stone and the warmth of the wood, while creating atmospheric interiors after dark. Every element – from the choice of materials to the layout of the rooms – is governed by the principle of simplicity and balance.

The house in Portugal as a living space

The architect’s main objective was to create a space in which the occupants find peace and a sense of belonging. It is a house that matures with the people, retaining its character but opening up to new experiences. In this sense, it is an affirmation that true architecture is born out of careful listening to a place and the needs of those who live in it.
