A new, unique space is being created on the grounds of Poznan’s Old Zoo – the Japanese Garden of Imagination. This ambitious project was born out of a combination of inspiration from gardens in various cities around the world, such as Wrocław, Berlin, Tallinn or San Francisco, and the needs of the citizens of Poznań. The realisation of this idea is a response to the lack of sufficient, elegant urban spaces that combine environmental qualities with a subtle yet sophisticated cultural offer.
The project was selected by residents as part of the Poznan Citizens’ Budget for 2024, demonstrating the broad public support and interest in the initiative. In describing the garden’s design, the creators emphasise that it is intended to be a place of harmony between nature, architecture and people. A key element of the design is well-kept vegetation and small architecture, modelled on classical Japanese gardens. Among the most important elements will be stone, symbolising the permanence and constancy of nature, and water, bringing life and movement.
The Japanese garden is not only an aesthetic, but also a philosophy in which every detail has its own deep meaning. Water and stone, already present in the Old Zoo, will be key elements in the garden’s composition, creating a tranquil atmosphere conducive to reflection and contemplation. The project’s originators point out that many elements of the garden’s infrastructure already exist, but need to be transformed and appropriately arranged to fully reflect the atmosphere of Japan.
Work on the design documentation is currently underway, with completion expected in the second quarter of 2025. This process includes not only the development of detailed plans for the garden, but also the obtaining of all necessary approvals and administrative decisions, which will allow construction and arrangement work to begin.
The Japanese Garden of Imagination will become a major new tourist and cultural attraction for Poznań, offering residents and tourists a unique place to relax and meet nature in the heart of the city. This kind of space will bring not only new life to the Old Zoo, but also a unique atmosphere.
