A Katowice flat in a new guise. The Mistovia project is characterised by harmony

In the Katowice district of Koszutka, a new arrangement has been created for a 46 sq m flat. Responsible for the concept is architect Marcin Czopek of the Mistovia studio, who undertook the task of transforming a familiar space into a place tailored to the owners’ current needs. He based the design on a consistent rhythm, harmonious proportions and carefully selected materials that create a coherent, yet unobtrusive composition. The Katowice flat was given a totally new expression.

The flat’s owners had lived there for a long time. They had previously commissioned an architect to design two rental units, but this time they focused on their living space. The space they were dealing with did not offer many points of reference – a previous renovation had stripped it of its original features, and the location in a pre-war tenement did not impose a specific aesthetic direction.

The project started from scratch, so to speak. Among other things, the new functional layout involved moving the kitchen into the living area, which required a special approach to the organisation of the space. We managed to find space for a kitchen island with mirrored legs, which give it an optical lightness. Hidden under the sliding board, the induction hob made it possible to arrange an additional worktop, which was important in view of the limited space.

Although the kitchen plays an important role in this interior, the bedroom is equally important. This has been clearly distinguished and deliberately kept in a different style. The materials used here are heavier: dark veneer, velour, thick fabrics and expressive animal print bed linen. Although the dark elements have been introduced in moderation, their presence has a clear impact on the perception of the room.

The overall design is distinguished by a thoughtful selection of materials. Wood, woodchip, stone and velour have been chosen for their interplay of textures and colours. The walls in broken white provide a neutral background for these combinations. The curves on the edges of the furniture and in the transitions give the interior a flowing character, which is intended by the designer to give the impression of a space that is not static, but full of dynamics.

The flat also features elements of local craftsmanship and carefully selected accessories. The fridge and dishwasher were fitted with knobs by the Polish brand HVYT, and the iconic Semi Pendant lamp, designed by Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup, hangs above the table. Lighting is also complemented by other models, including the Berimbau wall lamp from Ferroluce, which has found its place above the sofa.

The Katowice flat in Koszutka and its new arrangement is an example of a project in which every detail matters and functionality goes hand in hand with a sense of form and personal style.
