The Lumon Terminal Pro computer used by the macrodata refining workers in the popular TV series Severance has made waves around the world. Atomic Keyboard Studio has taken the dreams of fans of the series and created a keyboard inspired by it.
The new project from Atomic Keyboard, a studio active in the niche mechanical keyboard market, is the MDR Dasher Keyboard. It is a series-inspired, limited-edition retro keyboard created for fans of the ‘Split’ aesthetic and 1970s computer nostalgia. The massive keyboard with blue keys, built-in trackball and distinctive layout is an almost perfect copy. There are no Control or Escape keys, because there’s no escaping from the Lumon job.
Inspiration from half a century ago
Although the device is now associated with the TV series, its roots can be traced back to the 1970s, when Data General launched the Dasher terminals, now forgotten but at one time widely used in offices and institutions. The Dasher D200 model, with its unusual key layout and trackball on the right side, served as a direct model for the ‘Separation’ setting. Atomic Keyboard makes no secret of its inspiration, but instead of copying the prop 1:1, they have recreated the classic style, complementing it with modern conveniences: a USB-C port, compatibility with Windows, macOS and Linux, as well as a robust aluminium case and unique keycaps designed specifically for the occasion.
An aesthetic not just for fans of the “Split” series
Fans of “The Separation” see this keyboard as more than a stylish gadget. They see it as a symbol of closure and control. The absence of the Escape key is no coincidence, it’s a reference to the series’ theme of having no choice and being cut off from reality. Added to this is the clunky, heavy and old-fashioned form of the device, as if frozen in time, i.e. perfectly in keeping with the atmosphere of a modern office several decades ago. It is also a treat for collectors and retro-tech enthusiasts. Mechanical switches, a unique layout, an optical trackball: it all adds up to a piece of hardware that not only looks good, but also works great.
For now, just a waiting list
The official release date has not yet been announced, nor has the price. However, the manufacturer has launched a newsletter sign-up. Those interested in purchasing can leave their email address and wait for further information. One thing is certain: with the popularity of the series, the equipment could disappear from the shelves faster than the words ‘Lumon Industries’ can be uttered.
