A Krakow flat belonging to book lovers. This is what it looks like after its makeover.

The flat, designed by the KONTRAFORMA studio, combines precisely planned functionality, distinctive aesthetics and everyday comfort. The design was prepared for a young couple who are book lovers and for whom their home is both a living space and a place of work and rest. Their priorities were clear: to provide space for an impressive book collection, to create comfortable conditions for remote working and to give the interior character.

The transformation of the flat was not limited to cosmetic changes. The key was to redesign the layout to better suit the contemporary needs of the residents. Moving the door from the hallway to one of the rooms opened up the possibility of creating a spacious wardrobe in the entrance area — a practical solution that organises the space.

The existing layout of the rooms was reversed. A room with no clear function became a bedroom, while the former bedroom was transformed into a dining room open to the living room. This room, closed off with a glass set in a wooden frame, has become one of the most multi-purpose spaces in the flat.

The dining room as the centre of life

The new dining room serves as a space for meetings, work, rest and entertainment. Here, you can sit down with a book, organise a board game night or work comfortably in natural light. The interior is complemented by a low bookcase designed specifically for the investor’s needs and a large wardrobe that organises the space without dominating it visually.

The living area combines modernity with subtle references to the design of past decades. The central element of the living room is a custom-made piece of furniture with a movable front that conceals the television. Thanks to this, the space can change its character in an instant — from multimedia to more intimate.

The modern furnishings are broken up by an armchair inspired by the aesthetics of the Polish People’s Republic, and the whole is complemented by accessories in stronger colours, such as a large orange pouffe, which introduces energy and lightness.

Kitchen grace

The kitchen has been designed as an elegant space, but one that is not without dynamism. The lower veneer cabinets warm up the interior, while the upper cabinets in a muted, warm white shade give it a lightness. The strongest accent is the island finished with classic tiles in an intense navy blue. The same colour appears in the doorway leading from the hallway to the kitchen. This treatment allowed for aesthetic unity to be maintained.

The floor is decorated with tiles resembling dark pebbles embedded in a light mass — a material that is also repeated in the hallway, both on the floor and on the walls. This solution is practical, but also visually intriguing. In the entrance area, a burgundy wall lamp catches the eye, setting the tone for the entire flat. Burgundy details appear in various rooms, tying the design together and introducing a subtle but consistent colour scheme.

A bathroom in a calm tone

The bathroom was designed in accordance with the investors’ wishes as a subtle and harmonious space. The veneered cabinet under the washbasin and the mirror in a wooden frame warm up the interior, while the floor tiles, in a lighter version of the motif known from the kitchen and hallway, give the whole a timeless dimension.

A lot has also changed in the bedroom. In order to make it a comfortable place to rest, the acoustics have been improved. The use of wallpaper and slats has made the room soundproof and at the same time created an interesting decorative composition. It is an interior that promotes regeneration and cuts you off from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
