A modern house in Wrocław. They built it among old buildings

The single-family house in Wrocław, designed by the 3XA studio, is a symbol of modern solutions that at the same time draws on the rich urban tradition. It is a place where every detail has been thought through to create a space full of light, functionality and harmony with the surrounding nature. An innovative approach to the difficulties posed by the unusual terrain made it possible to create a modernist residence that draws on historical garden estates.

“The House Between” was built on Karlowice in Wrocław. The architects had to design it in a difficult environment. They worked on a site with a challenging layout – with a narrow frontage, a considerable difference in ground levels and significant spatial constraints. These challenges became the starting point for creating a compact block on the street side and planning space for a large garden.

The existing slope meant that the exit to the garden was lowered in relation to the level of the entrance to the building, which in turn allowed us to achieve greater height and spaciousness in the living area ,” describe architects from studio 3XA.

The result is a modern building, which the architects described as the ‘House Between’. The name refers directly to the house’s surroundings, which on the one hand is adjacent to old buildings and on the other is a buffer between the hustle and bustle of the big city and the quiet garden.

The interior has a well thought-out and very practical functional layout. The lower part is the living area with a large living room. From here, one can comfortably access the garden. The upper floors are occupied by a private area with bedrooms.

The building is characterised by a simple, white body, whose scale and form is in keeping with the neighbouring buildings. The large glazing and green terraces allude to the idea of living close to nature – a leitmotiv of 20th-century garden cities.
