The new products in the Bespoke AI range save energy, allow them to be operated remotely and, above all, look great. They are examples of minimalist design, allowing them to blend into the home landscape and for users to enjoy their capabilities. The new products were presented at EuroCucina in Milan.
Samsung has been conducting research for years to make the devices it designs more efficient and capable of doing more. Thanks to the achievements of scientists and engineers, their performance can be optimised, their power consumption can be reduced, which in turn translates into savings. Artificial intelligence, which manages the entire system, helps in this task.
We find out that being ‘eco’ every day is possible by looking to Sweden. Near Stockholm, the Brobyholm estate is being built to be an example of an energy-efficient place, aided by artificial intelligence. Samsung has supplied fridges, ovens, dishwashers, washing machines and dryers, which are powered by photovoltaic panels on the roofs. The homes will be equipped with an energy storage system to make them energy independent. The first demonstration house that has been built makes one optimistic about the whole project. As soon as the sun rises, the house starts generating and storing energy. On sunny days, the smart home system switches on the heating or air conditioning in advance to save energy during the day when the sun goes down or it becomes cloudy. On hot days, in the absence of the owners, SmartThings can automatically turn on the air conditioning and lower the blinds to keep the temperature down. What’s more, even before you leave the house, you can pre-load the laundry in the washing machine and SmartThings will determine when energy consumption is lowest during the day and automatically start the machine. The amount of energy produced and consumed can be tracked on your phone screen. This gives you a sense of control and makes it easier to organise your household chores. Let’s go back to Milan, however.
The Samsung appliances presented at EuroCucina 2024 are the most modern appliances in the brand’s portfolio. They consist of built-in kitchen appliances and other smart products from the Bespoke AI series. The manufacturer has succeeded in developing solutions that make the appliances work by using less energy and without losing their functionality and efficiency. Examples?
The Samsung stand also showcased appliances that switch off when we leave the house. There are more intelligent solutions to promote lower energy consumption. With Optimal Charging, the vacuum cleaner robot only charges to 60 per cent during peak hours, and Optimal Cheduling will schedule the dishwasher cycle during off-peak hours.
Other built-in appliances – fridges, dishwashers or ovens – were also on show in the Premium Built-in Kitchen area. A novelty is the wide built-in fridge with bottom freezer. It is the answer to the needs of those who love to cook, or who live with several people. The fridge, thanks to the AI Energy mode, reduces energy consumption by 10 per cent. If necessary, the energy-saving mode will allow users to save energy by changing the compressor speed and frequency of the defrost cycle. In terms of keeping food fresh, meanwhile, the Twin Cooling Plus system helps. It ensures that food stays fresh for longer by varying the temperature and humidity in the refrigerator using independent evaporators and air circuits.
The Laundry Combo washer-dryer is able to keep energy consumption to a minimum. The special Ecobubble system effectively removes dirt by washing in cold water. Equipped with a 7-inch screen, it even allows you to answer your phone directly from the washer dryer. The appliance connects to others and the screen on the front allows you to control them.
The lifespan of people is increasing, we observe that they want to spend more and more time on their own development, they do not want to waste it on unnecessary activities. That is why we believe that technology that enables inter-device connectivity will enhance their quality of life,” said Moohyung Lee, EVP and Head of the Customer Experience Team, Digital Appliances (DA) Business at Samsung Electronics.
A similar screen has been included in the Anyplace induction hob. The latter is distinguished by the fact that almost its entire surface is used for cooking. This is made possible by 22 rectangular coils, which give it a larger cooking surface than a conventional 4-field hob. The Anyplace induction hob is equipped with Anti-Scratch Glass with enhanced scratch resistance.
At the show, we were able to see the new energy-efficient dishwasher, which features the WaterJet Clean system. It provides intensive cleaning from every angle, contributing to energy efficiency. What’s more, when the Extra Silence programme is activated, the appliance operates at a noise level of just 41 dB. In addition, with the SmartThings app, users can save more energy for their other daily activities. The AI Energy mode within SmartThings monitors energy use and predicts current energy consumption. Users can also activate the energy-saving mode if monthly electricity bills seem to exceed the target. The dishwasher then uses up to 23 per cent less energy with the Pots & Pans programme, lowering the temperature of the main wash and hot water rinse mode while extending the cycle time.
Alongside technology development, Samsung is mindful of design. As part of Milan Design Week 2024, the Newfound Equilibrium exhibition showcased Samsung’s user-centred design philosophy. The interactive installation interacted with the various senses and was like a soothing journey through a fairytale world. The final exhibition room offered an opportunity to tap into the sense of touch. It showcased the artistic front designs by MUTIN for the AirDresser fridge and steam cupboard. The fronts designed by MUTIN had a rough surface and the protruding parts allowed the texture to be felt.
