A cottage in the style of Zagorze, which was built in the village of Poręba Wielka located in the Beskid Wyspowy. The Beskid Wyspowy is a unique place, full of islands and islets, trodden trails and undiscovered, completely wild paths. It hides not only the beauty of nature, but also an unusually cosy cottage for rent.
A cottage in the Zagorze region – as charming as its surroundings
Its interior is as charming as its surroundings. It was the surrounding scenery and the breathtakingly picturesque view from outside the window, which changes with each season, that were the main inspirations for the architect.
The interior of the cottage was designed for visiting families with children. The interior design for a rental, is quite a challenge, where the focus should be on maximising the use of space, but also on creating a cosy interior that replaces the house – for the visitors.
The designer created a cosy interior, inspired by the natural surroundings and the breathtaking view of the spreading Beskid Wyspowy mountain range, which subtly enters this small cottage. The cottage is year-round, which means it has to be practically suitable for the winter as well as the summer season, a fact that was carefully verified by both the designer and the investors.
The main inspiration was the view outside the window – the spreading Beskid Wyspowy, which changes with every season of the year, the aura of the exterior, which affects the perception of the interior of the designed space. The main idea was to design a cosy and warm interior.
Which will have a good design base, so as to change in it the additions that will add character and give the opportunity to surprise regular customers of the cottage.
After the first meeting with the investors, we wanted to create a cosy interior that had the beautiful colours that we can find in nature. The living room is dominated by an orange sofa, which alludes to the name and logo of the cottages – SUNSET HOUSE, the name is not coincidental, it refers to the setting sun, which sets perfectly behind the mountain on which the cottage is located.
When entering the cottage interior, the first point of interest is the kitchen, which has been cleverly designed under the stairs, making maximum use of the remaining space; the entire kitchen is functional and has everything necessary for cooking a home-cooked meal.
The designer was keen to differentiate the fronts of the kitchen cabinets, as we can see, the under stairs cabinets have been made of a uniform front, while the lower and upper cabinets have milled fronts, which give an impression of subtlety. Above the worktop, there are beautifully decorated tiles that add to the delicacy of the built-in, in addition, it is worth noting the playful porcelain furniture handles and jeweled gold tap.
One of the highlights of the cottage is the large table with 6 chairs, which comes from the family-run company Rustykalne wnętrze, which makes all of its furniture in Poland from 100% pine wood, which is coated with wax to give the furniture a rustic look. The ground floor has an en-suite shower room, which has been finished in colourful tiles with a rustic design that is very characterful, note the playful glass lamps that add a touch of delicacy. In addition, the designer-designed washbasin cabinet, which gives a nod to Zagreb design and craftsmanship, catches the eye.
On the ground floor, there is a staircase that invites you through a stone corridor to the intimate part of the cottages – the bedrooms. The bedrooms, which are located on the first floor of the cottage, each got their own name. The names were invented by the builders, referring to the wild animals that visit the cottage – the roar, the stork’s nest and the fox’s burrow.
The roar is a room with a king size bed, with a stunning view from outside the window, plus the room has a modern mural wallpaper, which is a break to the bottle green that definitely dominates with a light touch of brown. Of note are the wall sconces, which are meant to reference deer antlers.
The Stork’s Nest, is a bedroom that has modularity – two separate beds that can be combined into one.
The beds in the characterful colour of the stork’s legs introduce a pleasant and unfussy atmosphere. This bedroom intertwines wood with red checkered wallpaper, while on the main wall, next to the armchair, there are original red skis from a Polish company, which fit perfectly into the overall presentation.
The fox’s burrow, is the smallest room and is characterised by a delicate décor, where the bed is tucked away in a way that resembles a natural burrow, and on the wall opposite the bed, hangs a frame with a playful lamp in the shape of a goose’s head, which can be interpreted as the symbolic prey of the fox that hides it in its burrow. This room exudes charm and mystery, creating an atmosphere of a soothing asylum in which to take refuge after an eventful day.
It is worth noting the detailing of the embroideries at the headboard of the bed, which were designed by the designer.
The embroidery refers to the name of the cottage, depicting the setting sun behind the mountains in various interpretations of form and colour.
On the first floor, there is a second bathroom, which has a comfortable and large bathtub. It is worth noting a painting by Gabriela Stańczyk, inspired by a painting by Władysław Jarocki – “Hucułka” (“Highlander”), the painting was given to the investors, by the designer Patrycja Dorczak. It is an interesting accent to the interior, the background of which is a natural stone wall in the colours of the setting sun.
An interesting solution that deserves attention is the detailing of the wooden ceiling fascia. The grille was made to the designer’s design, by a local craftsman with attention to the smallest detail.
The designer proposed the solution as a nod to the traditional finishing of the Zagorze-style house. My main idea, was to create a functional place, however, referring to the traditional look of wooden cottages in our region, which was inhabited by Zagórzans, but also on a modern interpretation, a light dose of pleasant eclecticism came out of it.
The cottage project is a perfect example of how a beautiful interior can be designed when inspired by the natural world. Not only is it a highly aesthetically pleasing design, it is also functional and thoughtful. Visiting ‘homebuyers’ return here as if to their own private enclave, where they can rest and relax freely, along with the picturesque view from outside the window, which changes every season, creating unique memories.

About the studio:
Patrycja Dorczak Interior Design – “I am a young designer who works on original projects. Working in interior design gives me a great deal of professional satisfaction, and I care about working with clients ‘in person’. Designing apartments/houses is a process that can take a few months/years, over the course of this time the client’s sense of design also changes and often the first versions of designs accepted at the beginning of the project change, which I think is beautiful and adds authenticity to these interiors.” – reads the studio’s website dorczakpatrycja.wixsite.com/my-site
