The building is located in Toronto and is 185sq m in size. Its unusual shape is a result of the need to fit the building into a limited space. A narrow house was created, where geometric treatments resulting from the constraints, became the decorative element of the entire building.
The house was built for a family who wanted to live in a quiet location on the outskirts of the city. Canadian studio Reigo & Bauer designed the building to make the best use of the available land and create a structure that is pleasing to the eye.
The house is narrow and slender, a reference to the old trees towering over the building. Its façade is almost entirely covered with grey diamond-shaped tiles. The tiles were also placed on the garage door, which enhances the visual coherence. An interesting feature is the rounded indentation made in the southern part of the building. This created a covered, stepped entrance. This allows for additional windows and better illumination of the interior. At the same time, the architects took care to maintain a minimum distance from the neighbouring building.
Playing with geometry to achieve unexpected results – a frequent ace in the hand of Reigo & Bauer – also occurs on the roof, which consists of triangular facets. These connect the offset gables diagonally from the front of the house to the rear.
A characteristic feature of the front section is the irregular arrangement of narrow vertical windows. Such windows illuminate the interior and at the same time give the occupants a sense of privacy. Inside, rooms have been designed for each member of the family. The living area consists of the kitchen placed between the dining room and the living room. A subdued green wall separates the kitchen from the staircase.
The design of the Reigo & Bauer house is distinguished by its unusual approach to the development of a difficult site. The use of geometric solutions has created an attractive and functional space. The house was designed to make the best use of the available light, while at the same time fitting in with the surroundings and complying with regulations. With its original massing and architectural details, the building is an eye-catcher and an example of a successful project adapted to a difficult site.
