Faced with a growing housing crisis, Barcelona is seeking new development models that respond to the real needs of the city’s residents. Rising prices and the limited availability of housing require decisive action by public institutions. One response to these challenges is the Illa Glòries project, which provides affordable housing and redefines social relations and the way the urban community functions. Barcelona-based studio Cierto Estudio is responsible for the development of one of the buildings, with a focus on inclusivity, sustainability and spatial flexibility.
Housing as a shared and flexible space
Cierto Estudio designed building A of the Illa Glòries development with the aim of creating an open, adaptable space devoid of traditional functional hierarchies. The layout of the units encourages change and can be adapted to different family living models. Equal-sized rooms, the absence of a dominant living room and the strategic positioning of the kitchen highlight a new approach to flat design. The spaces have been designed to support interpersonal relationships and allow for a variety of use configurations. Diagonal connections allow for multi-directional views and articulated zones enhance interior functionality.
Design with a gender perspective
One of the key design considerations was the need to incorporate a gender perspective. The building’s spatial strategy prioritises safety, shared responsibility and the integration of different family spheres of life. The well-thought-out layout of communal and semi-private spaces promotes neighbourly interaction and enables mutual support. The visibility and central location of the kitchen and the integration of caring functions into daily life emphasise the role of sharing responsibilities.

Illa Glòries – expansivecommunal spaces
The project is based on the idea of combining private life with community functioning. Courtyards, shared balconies and accessible rooftops create places for meeting and relaxation. The layout of the flats around the common spaces resembles a ‘corral’ typology, reinforcing mutual visibility and a sense of security. The connections between the interior and exterior of the building have a positive effect on social relations while protecting the privacy of the residents.
Sustainability and environmental responsibility
Illa Glòries meets the standards for Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB). The design makes use of CLT timber and passive climate strategies such as cross ventilation, solar protection and green roofs. More than half of the site is occupied by green spaces, which reduce the urban heat island effect and support local biodiversity. The solutions used minimise the carbon footprint and promote responsible resource management.

Integrated urban strategy in Illa Glòries
The urban layout of Illa Glòries involves a seamless transition between public and shared spaces. Pedestrian passageways connect the buildings to important points in the neighbourhood, such as Diagonal Avenue and the Mercat dels Encants market. The ground floors of the buildings have been allocated to commercial premises, increasing activity in the urban space and improving its accessibility.
