The State Music School of the 1st and 2nd degree in Konin, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, stands at the threshold of a major change. The school will soon be expanded and, as part of the modernisation, a modern concert hall with a teaching area will be created. The investment, worth PLN 118.7 million, has received funding from the European Union under the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and the Environment 2021-2027 programme. The project is being carried out as part of the ‘Expansion, reconstruction and renovation of concert halls of art schools in Poland’ initiative. The architectural concept was developed by the Limba Eko design office from Kraków.
The design of the new concert hall in Konin is full of musical references. The facades and floors of the building will be characterised by an alternating arrangement of dark and light stripes, reminiscent of piano keys, which will give the building an artistic character. The simple, disciplined form of the building, reminiscent of an elongated cuboid, has been designed to fit harmoniously into the urban layout of the city. The most representative part of the building – the concert hall – will receive a façade finished with bricks alluding to the historical development of Konin. The vertical arrangement of bricks will resemble organ pipes, and the use of traditional finishing materials such as ‘old brick’ is intended to emphasise respect for history and musical tradition.
The new concert hall, designed in collaboration with an acoustician, will accommodate a large audience and meet the highest acoustic standards. Thanks to its “inverted fan” design, irregular shape and lack of parallel walls, it will provide excellent sound quality. The use of sound-absorbing materials will minimise echoes and interference, which is particularly important in concert halls. In addition to the concert space, the building will also house teaching, administrative and technical facilities. The two-storey building, with a partial basement, will be equipped with modern technologies, such as a mechanical ventilation system, air conditioning and a lift for transporting pianos. The entire project has been designed in accordance with accessibility requirements for people with disabilities and safety standards.
The new concert hall in Konin is an investment that will not only raise teaching standards at the State Music School, but will also contribute to the development of the city’s cultural life. It will make it possible to organise more artistic events on a local and national level, and will also become a place for the integration of the artistic community. The project also envisages the construction of internal courtyards, which will be conducive to the organisation of intimate outdoor concerts and student recreation. The overall investment is part of the drive to raise the quality of music education in Poland and also supports the development of cultural infrastructure at the local and national level.
