The new residential buildings at 3a Kilińskiego Street in Łódź are to be an example of combining modern solutions with respect for the historic character of the city centre. The buildings will occupy a corner section of the plot in the vicinity of Staromiejski Park.
The building at Kilińskiego Street is designed as a tenement house of varied height, adapted to the surrounding buildings. The height of the block increases towards the corner, which allows it to be emphasised as a key element of the urban composition. Internal courtyards and sunny terraces, both leisure and recreational, are important communal elements, offering residents a space to meet and relax outdoors. In addition, the project involves the construction of roof gardens.
The architecture of the building is enhanced by numerous openings towards the park, which not only provide attractive views, but also optimise the access of light to the interiors. Cut-outs in the massing on the North Street side divide the long façade, giving it a light and open appearance, while the glazing introduces an element of modern transparency.
The aesthetics of the project draws inspiration from the factory heritage of Łódź. The façade’s repetitive modules allude to the industrial window divisions and rhythmic drawings of the post-war buildings in the vicinity of Północna Street. The façade finished with ceramic cladding in a variety of shades and textures emphasises the connection with the history of the place, at the same time giving the whole a contemporary character, the architects explain.
When working on the project, the Design Lab Group team wanted to create a high-quality development that would enliven the urban space. The concept is not only to complement the cityscape, but also to build its identity as a space that combines tradition and modernity.
