A shop window can be art. Façade of the Tiffany & Co. shop in Stuttgart

The interior of the new Tiffany & Co. shop and its facade were designed by architects from the MVRDV studio. The exclusive boutique is located in the Dorotheen Quartier in Stuttgart. Its façade merges with the shop window and exemplifies a creative design approach. The ceramic elements are arranged in a mosaic to create a work of art that catches the eye.

The shop windows are the showpieces of the premises. Projects such as the façade of the Tiffany & Co. shop demonstrate how to attract customers in an attractive way. In designing the façade, the architects were inspired by Tiffany’s innovative materials and decided to build it with handmade diamond-shaped ceramic elements. Their attachment is almost invisible, making the elements look as if they are floating in the air. The individual elements have an iridescent finish, which is reminiscent of Favrile Glass patented by Louis Comfort Tiffany in 1894.

An additional feature is the three-dimensionality of the façade. The individual elements can be touched, exploring their surface, which is reminiscent of touching the brand’s jewellery.

A total of 2,829 ceramic elements make up the façade, which are mounted directly to the glass showcase using steel fixings. Mounted both outside and inside, they give the impression of fluidity. The density of the diamond decorations is adjusted to achieve transparency, allowing passers-by to look inside the boutique.

Each ceramic piece was cast by hand and then glazed in one of nine colours, which create a gradient from Tiffany’s signature robin’s egg blue to pristine white. The pieces were produced by Koninklijke Tichelaar, which is the oldest ceramics manufacturer in the Netherlands.
