The owners wanted to build a house with a classic gabled roof and a wooden façade. The result is a beautiful house that feels like a minimalist villa, devoid of ornamentation and superfluous elements. The building was designed by architects from Thellend Fortin Architectes.
The house is located in Orford, Canada. It is an area filled with greenery and there are only a few other residential buildings nearby. The house is adjacent to a forest, with maple and fir trees stretching to the horizon. The mix of deciduous and coniferous trees makes the area look attractive at any time of the year. The investors know the area well. They had owned the plot of land for five years and often holidayed in the small house that stood here before. However, the building no longer met their expectations, so they turned to the architects for a new design.
The owners’ new home was to be characterised by its traditional form and correspond to the forest surroundings. The building was to provide a sense of privacy, so several outbuildings were erected on the plot, opening up into the middle of the plot. The house itself has a pitched roof, wooden cladding and metal trim.
In order to integrate the house with its surroundings, the architects designed a walking path that winds between the trees and connects the house with the garden pavilion (summer lounge and swimming pool) and the access road.

The interior of the building is designed in a minimalist style. The largest room is the high living room and the mezzanine offers a brilliant view of the forest. The rooms are decorated with metal panels, waxed wood and polished marble. Most of the furniture has been integrated into the architectural design. Technical elements such as heating and lighting have been concealed behind wall cladding and suspended ceilings. The entire building has underfloor heating.
The architects opted for timeless solutions. The simple architecture and the avoidance of unnecessary additions mean that the building will look good even decades from now.
