A sports building like a green town? A daring project by Zaha Hadid Architects

GO PARK Sai Sha is the first work in Asia by Zaha Hadid Architects to combine sports, retail and leisure functions. Located in a picturesque corner, the complex is an example of sports architecture that attractively combines different sports in a single development. Looking like a set of green islands, the facilityhas already attracted more than one million visitors since it opened in January 2025.

Situated between picturesque hills and a bay leading to the South China Sea, GO PARK Sai Sha takes advantage of Hong Kong’s unique landscape. The layout of the development was inspired by traditional mountain villages, where houses and paths form a settlement fabric submerged in nature. The architects paid homage to the local heritage by integrating the individual blocks with the contours of the surrounding hills and coastline.

Breaking down the boundaries between inside and outside

The focal point of the establishment is the main street surrounded by cafés, restaurants and shops. The building’s interiors flow seamlessly into covered courtyards, while gentle ramps and winding alleys lead through the levels. This makes it possible for anyone, regardless of physical ability, to move freely around the grounds and enjoy the panoramic view of the complex.

Paulo Flores, partner at Zaha Hadid Architects, explains that the design is based on two key ideas: “the fabric of the landscape” and the “elevated village”. The first is an attempt to draw nature into the heart of the architecture, with numerous green patios, rooftop gardens and glazing bringing the outdoors indoors. The second creates the impression of a town spread out over levels, where commerce, sport and entertainment are intertwined in a dynamic whole.

Sport and recreation at the highest level

GO PARK Sai Sha’s facilities range from football and lacrosse fields, tennis, basketball, padel and pickleball courts to climbing walls, golf at the driving range or cycling and running trails. A unique feature is GO PARK Aqua – offering excursions into the mountains and cruises on the bay. Inside the building is a multi-purpose stadium with a capacity of 1,500 spectators, a fencing hall and a 25-metre swimming pool, providing the opportunity to host sporting competitions as well as concerts or community events.

Simon Yu, director of ZHA’s Hong Kong office, emphasises that the priority was to create a place close to the people of Sai Sha. With its open spaces, convenient connections and abundant recreational offerings, the complex has become a natural meeting point and at the same time an example of responsible, sustainable architecture in line with the idea of sustainable urban development.
