This small flat, designed by Kasia Kesling of the Purple studio, is an example of how, even within a limited floor area, it is possible to create a light, pastel-coloured space full of subtle character. The interior was created for a young student who is starting out in Wrocław and dreamed of a space that was soft and feminine, yet without being overly saccharine. The designer opted for a contemporary interpretation of a French townhouse – delicate, light, with a touch of Parisian ease, yet framed within modern proportions.
The open-plan flat with a separate bathroom required a very deliberate approach to functionality. It was crucial to separate the living and private areas in such a way as to maintain a clear layout, whilst avoiding overloading the interior with too many elements. The role of division was taken on by spacious built-in storage – designed to organise the space without visually dominating it. As a result, the flat has remained open, and its layout promotes everyday comfort.
Light and atmosphere
Kasia Kesling focused on the view through the large windows right from the entrance, making natural light one of the most important elements of the design. Matt surfaces softly reflect the light, emphasising the textures of the materials and creating a calm, pastel-hued atmosphere. Instead of a cold, sterile feel, there is a sense of softness – an effect that builds the flat’s atmosphere and makes it appear larger.
Accents with character
Although the base palette is light and delicate, the design does not shy away from bolder tones. Dark built-in units, the rust-coloured detail on the bed and orange accessories break up the pastel softness and lend the interior a sense of character. The designer describes this effect as “a sweet sweetie with a bitter centre” – a combination that avoids being overly saccharine and infuses the flat with a contemporary energy.
Artistic touches and unexpected solutions
The paintings by Agata Bronikowska (@plantacja) play an important role. Her abstract compositions add emotional depth and a slightly artistic tone to the interior. The colour palette of the works harmonises with the pastel base, whilst at the same time providing a subtle contrast. Alongside them are design elements that lend the space a slightly playful character – such as the transparent plexiglass leg of the desk or combinations of materials with contrasting textures. These are details that are gradually revealed with every subsequent glance.
The flat designed by Kasia Kesling does not attempt to follow the mid-century trend. Instead, it focuses on lightness, a pastel ‘playful vibe’ and an atmosphere that the client summed up most aptly: it’s simply a little gem – small, but full of character.
