A subtle interior in Sopot. It was designed by Jan Sikora.

In Sopot, on the Botanica estate, an interior has been created that goes beyond the traditional notion of design. The Japandi flat, designed by architect Jan Sikora, combines subtlety, natural materials and the idea of human intimacy with space. The project was created for the architect’s friends Adam and Emilia and was a response to their dream of a home full of tranquillity. “We spent many moments together and I felt their vibe perfectly. They had full confidence in me,” Jan Sikora recalls. – ‘Their dreams oscillated around the Japandi style.

Jan Sikora and the Japandi philosophy

The Japandi style, a combination of Japanese simplicity and Scandinavian minimalism, became the axis of the entire project. The flat is dominated by wood, muted colours, soft lines and handicraft elements.

– “This is another space that I was privileged to be able to tell a story around the theme of Japan,” – Sikora says. – “I previously created an interior for a native Japanese woman, which gave me a deeper understanding of the authenticity of these places.”

A subtle interior full of softness

The architect consciously avoids sharp angles, replacing them with curves and rounded forms. The soft lines of the furniture, doors and walls make the interior feel closer to human nature.

– ‘I have a big problem with contemporary architecture being so angular,’ Sikora admits. – ‘We as humans are not made up of verticals and levels. That’s why when I build places for people, I try to give them just that – understated, non-obvious, soft forms.”

This philosophy translates into the multisensory nature of the flat – the space interacts with sight, touch, smell and acoustics.

Wood and light in Jan Sikora’s design

One of the key elements is oak wood, which appears in the floors, furniture and joinery details. It is a material chosen with great care.

– “During my ten-year acquaintance with our Kashubian carpenter, I discovered the perfect colouring of the oak wood,” says Jan Sikora. – “When the investor said he wanted a lot of wood, I knew we already had half the success.”

A unique solution is the kitchen island, which conceals both the TV and the dining table. In this way, the problematic sewer riser has been turned into the focal point of the flat.

Lighting, details and bold accents

Although the Japandi style dominates the design, there is a strong floral motif in the bathroom – a kind of ‘spell’ that gives the daily rituals a special touch. There is also no shortage of unique lighting solutions. One of the architect’s lamps went into mass production, while another – inspired by Japanese neon lights – hangs above the table. The geometric curtain rod in the living room, on the other hand, refers to art déco, introducing a hint of graphic expression.

Japandi flat in Sopot – an interior full of tranquillity

Jan Sikora ‘s project is more than just an impressive interior design. It is a story about harmony, emotions and the need for closeness with nature. Thanks to the author’s approach, the relationship with investors and bold ideas, a space was created that works on all the senses. The Japandi Apartment in Sopot shows that an interior can be not only beautiful but also deeply personal. It is a space that is soft, subtle and filled with calm – exactly what we need most today.
