This flat in Barcelona’s Sant Gervasi district was designed with a young family and their daily routines in mind. The design by Skye Maunsell Studio moves away from the typical division into separate rooms in favour of an open-plan layout. Across 175 square metres, the architect has created a flexible interior where the boundaries between different zones can be freely adjusted.
The work began with an analysis of the future residents’ lifestyle. It was their needs that formed the basis for the new functional layout. The various parts of the flat were arranged like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, moving away from the classic model of rooms separated by solid walls. In their place, wooden partitions with a dual function were introduced. They define the boundaries of individual zones whilst also housing storage units and built-in furniture, creating the impression of a continuous wooden surface running through the entire interior.
The division of the flat is facilitated by large sliding doors. These allow the size of the rooms to be quickly increased or decreased, adjusting the level of privacy to current needs. Fabrics are an equally important element of Skye Maunsell’s design. A curved curtain introduces softness and dynamism, creating a textile layer that runs through the successive zones of the flat.

The unique atmosphere of the interior is determined by a skilfully selected palette of materials. Alongside birch wood, there is stainless steel, glass, lacquered surfaces, white walls and natural fabrics. The décor is complemented by Mediterranean tiles, which cover the floors throughout the flat. The same pattern has also been used on the terrace. The tiles were custom-made in a warm yellow colour.
Dedicated furniture was also designed for this interior. Its form echoes the materials and motifs used, making the furnishings a visual extension of the design. All these well-thought-out elements create a concept with a distinct atmosphere, where functionality goes hand in hand with emotion and comfort.
