In the seaside resort of Jūrmala in Latvia, an apartment inspired by memories has been completed. This original interior design is the work of the OAD – Open Architecture Design studio. The building housing the apartment is situated right on the Baltic coastline.
Apartment by the Baltic Sea
The design was born out of a passion for the aesthetics of 20th-century holiday homes, with a nod to the local context. The designers drew on images etched in their memory, such as soft light filtering through net curtains, the tranquillity of lazy afternoons and the simplicity of everyday rituals. They translated these motifs into the language of a contemporary interior. The location itself, the seaside resort of Jūrmala, proved to be significant. Its history and landscape provide a distinct context for the project.
A seaside landscape within the interior
The ground floor of the apartment has been kept in a muted colour palette, allowing the focus to be on details, textures and furnishings. The heart of the interior is a solid wooden table, evoking associations with traditional craftsmanship. The materials were selected with the surroundings in mind: pine forests, sandy dunes and the sea breeze. In the kitchen, light curtains filter the summer light, which spills softly across the interior, evoking scenes from childhood.

The upper floor of the property houses the residents’ private areas. The couple have their own oasis there, comprising a bedroom, bathroom and dressing room. Each of the children has also been given their own part of the flat, and additional spaces have been set aside for shared study and play. The bathrooms feature patterned, moisture-resistant wallpaper, giving the rooms a cosier, homely feel reminiscent of days gone by.

The apartment was created by combining four flats spread across two floors of the building. This made it possible to create a large space, meeting the needs of a large family, including a live-in carer. Despite such a large floor area, the apartment feels light and cohesive. Thanks to the dominance of light, beachy colours, natural materials and well-balanced proportions, one can relax here in the idyllic atmosphere of a summer retreat by the Baltic Sea.
