An attic with character. They designed the office in a pre-war villa

An office has been created in the attic of a villa located on the Officers’ Housing Estate in Kraków, which subtly combines a contemporary function with the classic character of the place. The design by SMAGA ARCHITEKCI is an example of a balanced dialogue between the past and the present: modern interior solutions have been placed in the context of inter-war architecture.

The attic was designed to make maximum use of the available volume. Simple, geometric forms organise the layout of the rooms, clearly separating the work and client meeting areas. Large interior glazings allow light to move freely between the rooms, giving the interiors lightness and transparency. The space, clear in its planning and balanced in its proportions, allows for both intimate conversations at the table and individual work at the desk.

Materials and details

Natural materials in a light, muted palette dominate the design. Wood, stone and subtle fabrics create a warm backdrop for everyday work. Care has been taken with the material narrative: authentic, preserved parquet flooring has become one of the key elements of the interior, while ornate cabinet and bookcase fronts introduce discreet ornamentation that alludes to the classic character of the villa. Stone elements were used at selected points, emphasising the importance of the representative spaces. Every detail – from the type of veneer to the way the edges of the furniture are finished – has been thought through to create a coherent and orderly whole.

Light and atmosphere

Lighting plays an important role in the design: it is a means of creating mood and a tool for ergonomics. Warm spotlights create a cosy, almost homely atmosphere, while unobtrusive general lighting ensures comfortable working conditions throughout the day. Interior glazing enhances the lighting effect, evenly distributing daylight and minimising the need for intensive artificial lighting. In this way, the interior maintains a harmony between function and aesthetics and makes working in it less tiring and more focused.

Functionality and comfort

The designers at SMAGA ARCHITEKCI gave equal importance to ergonomics as to appearance. Freestanding furniture, ergonomic desks and wooden shelving have been selected with a view to the comfort of everyday duties and to building professional relationships with clients. Storage solutions are discreet but roomy, keeping the interior tidy and elegant. The meeting areas are designed to foster conversation and collaboration; subtle acoustic finishes and thoughtful separation of spaces take care of the intimacy of conversations even in an open layout. The overall focus is on creating a place where function and comfort complement each other.
