An eclectic flat in Warsaw. The interior is decorated with retro elements

It has 57 sq m and is located in Warsaw’s Tarchomin. The eclectic flat was designed by architects from the DESIGN BY PLURAL studio. Retro motifs and art were used to give the space an original character.

This is not a completely new flat. A couple in their thirties bought the property on the secondary market. Before moving in, they decided to carry out a general renovation to adapt the interior to their needs.

Most of the inspiration for the project came from the Investors themselves, who share a love of cinema and literature. ‘From the very beginning, we knew that art would be an important part of the décor,’ explain the authors of the project.

The designers point out that their common goal was to preserve the retro atmosphere. The flat was to reflect the character of postmodern Warsaw and refer to the history of the place. The challenge was to optimise the space. The kitchen and the living room were originally separate rooms and both the investors and the architects wanted to open them up to gain a larger, functional living area.

Another need to be realised was to gain additional space for a quiet working area. This was achieved with a window.

In order to create a natural division, without completely closing off this zone, we decided on partial glazing, and the protruding corner in the living room was rounded, which added fluidity to the interior, ” describe the architects.

The interior was designed in a mixed colour scheme. The eclectic flat is distinguished by a mix of pastels. Shades of blue are combined here with greens as well as browns and dark woods.

Throughout the interior, we have played with patterns and geometries, which gives the whole space character. We paid special attention to the ceilings: a subtle beige dominates in the living room above the sofa, blue appears in the hall to emphasise the geometry of the walls, and in the bedroom saturated green adds energy, ” add the architects DESIGN BY PLURAL.

The whole is complemented by decorations in the form of an extensive collection of books and film posters. An important decorative element is the carved wooden curtain rod grilles, which have been preserved from the original décor. This is a subtle tribute to the history of the place.

Finally, the floor. In the small toilet, it is decorated with a colourful mosaic made of so-called corsets, referring to the classic Warsaw floors, while in the kitchen, tiles in a chequerboard pattern have been laid on the floor.
