An eclectic flat on Belwederska Street: a design by Maja Dembowska for a couple

An eclectic flat has been created in a modernist tenement building on Belwederska Street, blending different eras into a cohesive, elegant whole. Designed by Maja Dembowska, the project exemplifies a thoughtful approach to modernising a second-hand flat, where preserved historical features coexist with modern functional solutions. The young couple for whom this space was created wanted comfort, a good layout and maximum use of storage space — without losing the sense of lightness.

The interior is based on an eclectic mix of eras. Modern furniture is paired with delicate stucco, whilst the original, rounded window and door mouldings have become one of the key focal points of the entire design. Antiques also feature in the space, including an old wooden clock, which adds an extra layer of history. The colour scheme is based on shades of burgundy and wine red, offset by muted blue and dark walnut wood.

A modernist foundation and eclectic combinations

Although the flat is on the high ground floor, it is exceptionally bright. From the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom, there is a view of the lush greenery of the courtyard, which becomes an integral part of the residents’ daily experience. Just a few steps away lies Łazienki Królewskie, which further enhances the location’s appeal.

One of the key design decisions was to brick up the entrance to the bedroom from the corridor and open it exclusively onto the living room via wide, bespoke double doors. Thanks to this, a spacious walk-in wardrobe was created within the large bedroom. Two symmetrical wardrobes with rounded corners emphasise the enfilade layout of the flat, and their form references the original glyphs.

A well-thought-out functional layout

The living room has been combined with the dining room to create an open-plan living area, whilst the kitchen now features a small table, perfect for morning coffee. The bathroom required the least work: the shower was replaced with a bath, the fittings and lighting were updated, and the washing machine was moved from the kitchen, improving the ergonomics of the entire flat.

The most difficult task proved to be reconciling all the functions with the need to maintain a sense of space. The flat is not large, so every centimetre had to be utilised with precision. The architect emphasises that she derived the greatest satisfaction from connecting the living room and bedroom with a wide door and restoring the original arched door lintel. It is this element that gives the interior its unique character and brings order to the whole composition.

The colour scheme sets the tone

The walls and ceilings are finished in a matt, light beige off-white shade, which warms the space and provides a neutral backdrop for more intense accents. Burgundy and wine tones feature in the upholstery of the TON chairs, the TAMO coffee table and the TYLKO bookcase. Muted blue brings a sense of calm, particularly in the bedroom, where it creates an elegant, intimate atmosphere. This colour scheme was one of the client’s requests and became the foundation of the entire concept.

Selected furnishings

The design features carefully selected furniture and lighting that emphasise the eclectic character of the interior. Notable pieces include the TON chairs, the TAMO coffee table and the TYLKO bookcase. The flat retains its original wooden flooring, rounded archways and bathroom tiles. These elements, combined with new materials and contemporary furnishings, create a harmonious whole in which the past and the present complement one another.

Maja Dembowska’s design is an example of how functionality, elegance and respect for the existing architecture can be combined in a small flat. Thanks to well-thought-out solutions and the skilful use of original details, a space has been created that meets the needs of a young couple whilst preserving the unique character of the modernist tenement building.
