Its surface area is 45 sq m. The flat is located in Kraków and is lived in by a mathematician and a designer. The bright space was filled with colourful additions, which created an ‘instagram-like’ interior. However, it was not just the look that mattered. The new living space is meant to meet all domestic needs.
The architects from Studio QUQU worked on the existing development layout. It did not require any changes. Only the wall that separates the hallway area from the kitchen was added. A wardrobe stood on one side of the wall and part of the kitchenette on the other. But from the beginning.
The flat is located in a modern building in one of the most beautiful districts of Krakow. The large, high windows reach from floor to ceiling and face two opposite sides of the world, which provides plenty of natural light. The windows on two sides also have a positive effect on air circulation.
Every centimetre counted in the interior, which is why it was possible to create a desk in the pleasant living area. Interestingly, the premises were already furnished four years ago. One might be tempted to say that the designer has succeeded in anticipating the future – the aesthetic solutions are very much ‘on trend’.
The eclectic interior skilfully combines several motifs. Even in the dining area, different eras are evident. The round oak table with a smoky finish is a contemporary design by Mater Design. The chairs placed next to it are vintage furniture from the 1970s (made by the Polish Bentwood Furniture Factory in Zwierzyniec). The seats are upholstered in English GP&J Baker fabric. The same fabric appears on the cushions arranged on the sofa. The original Arrben Italian chair did not need renovation – the piece of furniture from the 1980s is still in perfect condition and is a real adornment of the dining room.
The kitchen cabinetry was made by a local company. The fronts of the lower cabinets are of ash veneer, while the rest of the pieces are made of MDF coated with matt enamel. A stone worktop and decorative elements, including brass handles, complete the look. The tiles with their heterogeneous structure beautifully reflect the sun’s rays, adding a three-dimensional effect.
The living room is located in the same room as the kitchen and the home office. Despite its multifunctionality, a unique and intimate atmosphere has been created here. The lounge area is defined by a comfortable, albeit small sofa. The designer limited herself to a length of 190 cm – this limit was a key consideration when choosing furniture, as even a slightly larger model would have made it difficult to move freely around the flat. The living room area was created with relaxation in mind – it was designed in such a way that neither the desk nor the kitchen are visible from it.
A considerable challenge was the arrangement of the bathroom. The room is only 4,2 square metres. The space was decorated in shades of green, which were combined with walnut wood, marble and metal. Despite its small size, the space does not feel cramped. The bathroom is fully functional. The washer-dryer with a pull-out towel basket is concealed in a cabinet behind a milled door. The cupboard also conceals the toilet bowl, providing greater privacy.
The designed bedroom is synonymous with minimalism. It is the most peaceful room, both in terms of colour and furnishings. On an area of 11 square metres, a bed with a 160×200 cm mattress and a large, capacious wardrobe were accommodated. To maintain proportions, a large rectangular mirror was inserted to visually enlarge the space.
The flat in Krakow is an example of a skilful combination of various aesthetic motifs, which made it possible to create an original space. Despite its small size, an interior was created that responds to all the inhabitants’ needs.
