Two new murals adorning the main hall of the Malopolska Science Centre Cogiteon in Krakow are an unusual combination of art, science and technology. The projects were created as part of a collaboration between the Polish brand Medicine and Cogiteon. They were realised by one of the most respected street-art artists in Poland – Mikołaj Rejs. The designs for the murals were created by Medicine graphic artists Joanna Dobranowska, Judyta Ciba, Julita Nowosad, Marta Liszka, Paulina Czak and Sebastián Rubiano.
“Jungle of the future” – a journey into the world of imagination and science
The first of the murals, entitled ‘The Jungle of the Future’, encourages reflection on evolution and the impact of urbanisation on nature. The project contains numerous elements that surprise you with symbolism and encourage you to ask questions. We suggest some clues for further analysis:
- Hedgehog on fox – an image showing a hypothetical symbiosis between species that are adversaries in nature. Could evolution have led to such unusual interdependencies?
- Axolotls in the Polish ecosystem – an artistic vision that reminds us of species migrations in a changing world.
This mural is distinguished by the use of UV paints and specialised lighting, which creates a unique graphic theatre effect. The use of modern technology makes ‘Jungle of the Future’ not only a work of art, but also a multisensory experience.
Local fauna in the spotlight
The second mural presents the fish that inhabit the rivers and lakes of Malopolska. In this artistic vision, they swim around a submarine that symbolises the Cogiteon as a space for scientific discovery and exploration. The project refers to local nature, emphasising its uniqueness and importance in environmental education.
The collaboration between the Medicine brand and the Malopolska Science Centre Cogiteon was an inspiring challenge for both parties. Its creators and initiators talk about the project:
‘At Medicine, we believe that art has the power to change spaces and thinking. When Cogiteon invited us to collaborate, we immediately felt it was the perfect place for our murals – inspired by science, creativity and the courage of explorers – Ewelina Bajołek, Marketing Manager of Medicine.
Together with Cogiteon, we decided to create two murals. We decided that the theme of each would be the nature of Malopolska. However, we approached each project differently. One depicts the underwater world – it features popular fish species in our region. The other project shows other animals and plants of Malopolska – thus encouraging us to reflect on the evolution of flora and fauna – Krzysztof Malak, Special Projects Coordinator at Medicine.
The murals in the Cogiteon are more than just decoration. They are a bridge between science and imagination. Thanks to the special lighting and unique design, we can talk about the graphic theatre that is available at the Cogiteon – Oskar Błachut, press officer of the Malopolska Science Centre Cogiteon.
The murals at the Malopolska Science Centre Cogiteon are inspiring works of art that provoke thought and explore new perspectives. The collaboration between Cogiteon and Medicine has given the science centre a unique artistic dimension. It is worth mentioning that both murals are located inside the building, in a non-ticketed area. And this means that they can be admired completely free of charge, during the centre’s operating hours.
Come to the Cogiteon to see for yourself how science and art can work together to create a unique space for the imagination!
