The city has announced the start of pre-design work for the fourth metro line in Warsaw. The documents will be prepared by the Metroprojekt company. This is only the beginning of the work, and residents will have to wait a long time before the line is delivered. Officials are also making far-reaching plans. They have published a map according to which there will be five lines in Warsaw by 2050 and there is a chance that the metro will be autonomous.
The construction of new metro lines is always preceded by work to prepare design documentation. This is a difficult process to determine the optimal course of the tunnels and to take into account the constraints underground. In the case of Line 4 of the Warsaw metro, we will have to wait until 2027 for the results of the work.
We are consistently implementing the plan to build – consisting of five lines – a metro system in Warsaw by 2050. Today, we have taken another important step on this path. We have selected the company that will carry out the pre-design work for the M4 line. The expansion of public transport in the capital is invariably one of my priorities. During my first term in office, we commissioned as many as 11 new metro stations. three more stations and a technical station are under construction, and designs are already being drawn up for the first section of the M3 line. We are not slowing down! – says Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski.
Autonomous metro in Warsaw
The city will soon sign a contract with the winner of the tender. In the next stages, a concept for the fourth line will be developed, which will include analyses of route variants, station locations. All of them will have to be based on the prepared hydrogeological and geological-engineering documentation. Interestingly, the analysis will also answer the question of whether the fourth line will be able to operate autonomously, whether the carriages will be able to move without the presence of a driver. An autonomous metro involves the need to adapt metro stops, the edges of which will be surrounded by transparent walls with sliding doors. Will Warsaw have an autonomous metro? We will find out no sooner than 38 months after the first contract is signed.
Warsaw’s fourth metro line is to connect Tarchomin with Wilanów. The city has already published a preliminary map showing the estimated route of this route and the location of 23 stations. In total, the section is to be the longest in the capital as it will be 26 km long. It is already known that eight stations will be equipped with so-called ‘buffer track chambers’, which are used, for example, in the event of an emergency. They will allow traffic to be carried out on selected sections.
The second metro line continues to grow
At the same time, work is underway on the last three stations of the second metro line: Lazurowa, Chrzanów and Karolin. The tunnels to them will be excavated by TBM Anna and TBM Krystyna. Construction work is underway at the Karolin technical-station. It will be the second technical-station after STP Kabaty. The technical complex will consist of 34 facilities, including a hall for 40 trains. In total, the last three stations will be connected by a 4 km long tunnel.
Construction of the third metro line in Warsaw is due to start in 2028. It will connect the National Stadium with Gocław station. The line will be 8 km long and have seven stations. For more up-to-date information on the route of the third metro line, see our article HERE.
