Barack Obama Presidential Center: the complex is almost ready

Construction of the Barack Obama Presidential Center is underway in Chicago. The impressive development is now entering the final stages of completion. The complex is being built on the south side of the city, on the site of historic Jackson Park, and covers 7.8 hectares. The project began in 2021 and is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2026. The development includes the main museum building, a forum with spaces for education, a sports and leisure centre called Home Court and extensive green spaces with gardens and playgrounds. The whole development is set to become a new hub for the social, educational and cultural life of south Chicago.

Architecture and concept for the Barack Obama Presidential Center

The architectural design was prepared by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects of New York and Interactive Design Architects of Chicago. The complex consists of several buildings arranged among greenery to emphasise its park-like and ecological character. The dominant element is the museum’s 68.5-metre-high tower, whose massing is inspired by the gesture of raising a hand. The façade made of light-coloured stone enhances the impression of monumentality and elegance, while blending well with the surroundings. Glazed areas provide daylight and open up views of the park and Lake Michigan. The interior is designed as an open space that will combine exhibition, educational and recreational functions.

Forum and Home Court centre

Next to the museum is the Forum, which is intended to serve as a public and educational space. The building is planned to include an auditorium, workshop rooms, a café and a garden accessible to visitors. The architecture of the Forum is based on a horizontal composition, conducive to meetings and social integration. Another element of the complex is the Home Court, designed by the Moody Nolan Chicago office. It will feature a full-size basketball court, sports facilities and meeting rooms for local organisations. The facility is intended to support the development of youth initiatives and provide a place for daily activities for residents.

Green areas and landscape layout of the Barack Obama Presidential Center

Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, in collaboration with Site Design Group, is responsible for the landscaping design. The concept includes the creation of extensive gardens, walking paths, recreational areas and playgrounds. Part of the former Cornell Drive street has been closed off to reclaim space for pedestrians and cyclists. Greenery is to play a key role in the composition of the entire site, creating open spaces for residents and emphasising the centre’s connection to the natural landscape of Jackson Park.

Work progress and schedule

The museum’s tower reached its target height in mid-2024, marking the completion of essential construction work. Finishing works, installation of the stone façade and internal installations are currently underway. In the Forum and Home Court, work is underway on the interior design and installation of furnishings. In the outdoor areas, meanwhile, trees are being planted, lawns laid and pathways built. According to the Obama Foundation, all major structures are now complete and the development is entering the finishing phase.

Significance of the Barack Obama Presidential Center

The Barack Obama Presidential Center is intended to be a museum commemorating Barack Obama’s presidency and a place for the local community to meet and grow. The complex will house exhibitions on modern US history, spaces for debate and education, and a new branch of the Chicago Public Library. The project is expected to contribute to the revitalisation of the south side of Chicago, creating new jobs and encouraging investment in the park’s surroundings. Once completed, the centre will become one of the city’s most important cultural facilities and a new symbol of Chicago.
