Their construction has been awaited by Poznan residents for several years. The Berdychowo bridges are being built as a crossing for pedestrians and cyclists over the Warta and Cybina rivers. The bridges will connect Chwaliszewo, Ostrów Tumski and Berdychowo. The railings are currently being installed.
The design documentation for the bridges was prepared by a consortium consisting of: ARPA Architektoniczna Pracownia Jerzego Gurawskiego, Błażej Szurkowski, Maciej Sokolnicki and Adam Turczyn. The installation of the balustrades, which are made of glass, has begun. In this way, a walk across the bridges will offer better views of the Warta River area.
The installation of the railings begins on the bridge between Berdychow and Ostrow Tumski. There, the contractor has prepared guides to hold the tempered glass panes that make up the balustrades. We can already see the painting of the target colour on the side surfaces of the arch and the deck of the shorter structure. In parallel, a resin surface is being laid on the bridge for pedestrians and cyclists to walk on. Preparations for such work are also underway on the longer bridge connecting Ostrów Tumski and Chwaliszewo. All this shows that we are already at a very advanced stage of work, and the completion of this investment is getting closer and closer,” says Marcin Gołek, vice-president of the company Poznanskie Inwestycje Miejskie.
The crossing consists of two parts. The longer one goes over the Warta River and is 165 metres long, while the other over the relief canal is 117 metres long. Currently, on the longer bridge, the contractor is busy preparing places for railings and recesses for drainage. Work has also started there on the installation of water collection elements.
The balustrades will have handrails in which the lighting system will be installed. The light sources will be concealed and will only make their presence known at night. The selection of luminaires and the development of a technically appropriate solution were carried out in collaboration with the Department of Metrology, Electronics and Lighting Technology at Poznan University of Technology.
Both structures are based on abutments, and the supports previously used were dismantled due to their temporary nature. The designers opted for a minimalist style, expressive in form and sparing in detail, so the choice of appropriate balustrades and lighting was very important,” informs Poznań Municipal Investments.
The architects designed two slender ribbons suspended above the water level, which have no intermediate supports. In this way, the view of the Cathedral, Ostrów Tumski and the Saint Roch Bridge will not be disturbed. The bridges have an identical structure and form a coherent spatial composition.
When will the bridges be opened? It will probably be possible to take the first walk here in spring 2025.
