Elbląg attracts tourists because of its attractive riverside location and its unique combination of historic architecture and new developments. Strolling through the local Old Town, one can admire reconstructions of medieval townhouses alongside postmodernism, and observe the dynamic changes that are improving the functionality of the city as it continues to rebuild. One of the most important projects in recent years is the new boulevard on Granary Island, a place of particular importance in the history of Elbląg.
Revitalisation on Granary Island in Elbląg
The ongoing revitalisation of Granary Island is an important moment for the old part of the city. The hitherto neglected stretch of shore is to be transformed into a modern boulevard and boat moorings. The works cover the section from the High Bridge towards the city moat and Cardinal Wyszyński Bridge and from the Low Bridge towards the Fala Water Sports Centre. The project started a year late and the contractor took over the site at the end of August 2025.
History of Granary Island in Elbląg
Elbląg’s Granary Island is an area located opposite the Old Town, separated from it by a moat and for centuries serving as the city’s economic base. The first granaries began to be built here at the end of the 14th century, when the island was connected to the city by two bridges. In 1364, the first port crane was erected on the island. In addition, there was a merchant exchange on the island with a corvee chamber, where measurement standards were kept and municipal records were kept. The destruction of the place came with the Second World War. Very little of the old buildings survives today.

New boulevard on Granary Island
The project for the new quay of the revived island involves the creation of a walking boulevard, the installation of mooring equipment and the modernisation of floating jetties. Green areas will also be created to give the space an attractive and friendly character. The investment has been planned to meet the needs of both boaters and residents looking for a place to relax by the water.
The boulevard on Granary Island is an investment in the future of the city
The cost of the entire project is PLN 30 million, of which nearly PLN 27 million comes from funding under the Polish Order. The work is scheduled to be completed in November 2026. The modernisation of the waterfront is the second stage of a larger programme that also includes the construction of a car park on Warszawska Street. The aim of these measures is to improve the aesthetics of the city space, develop tourism and increase the investment attractiveness of Elbląg.
