Built in the forest. A house hidden between the trees

The house seems to float between the trees. It was designed by Kariouk architects. It is minimalist and heavily glazed, making it easy to observe nature.

The project was realised in the municipality of La Pêche in Canada. The house was built on a special mast, making its foundation considerably smaller than the floor area. When working on the project, the architects wanted to interfere minimally with nature. “Suspending” the building 20 m above the ground allowed them to meet these objectives.

Access to the building is possible from the cliff side, where a special platform has been installed. The building itself is oblong in shape and almost 30 m long. Entering the building, one finds oneself in a long corridor, which is entirely made of glass on the right side. On the left are successively the utility room, the guest bedroom, the bathroom, the master bedroom and the living area. The latter consists of a living room, a dining area and a kitchen area.

The forest chalet was built with CLT panels and glulam beams. It can be used all year round. The building is powered by energy obtained from photovoltaic panels. In summer, the interior can be easily cooled down, thanks to the considerable proximity to the lake. Simply open the windows and the space fills with crisp air. In winter, however, nature also helps. Strong glazing lets in sunlight and helps to warm the building. A fireplace installed in the room also helps if needed.

Interestingly, in designing the elevated structure, the architects also wanted to help the bats. They find shelter at the bottom of the building and have easier access to the lake.
