Built to the design of the so-called ‘Tigers’. The building on Chopina Street in Warsaw will be renovated

The monumental building on Chopina Street was designed in the spirit of socialist realism. Its original façade has been preserved to this day. Now the building will be renovated to restore its formersplendour

The City of Warsaw will allocate almost a quarter of a million zlotys for the renovation of the building. It is an edifice built in 1949-55 as part of the ‘ministerial district’ under construction. At present, it is part of a protected building complex adjacent to the AK “Ruczaj” battalion square. The complex consists of three residential buildings designed in the spirit of socialist realism by the so-called “Tigers”, i.e. three architects: Wacław Kłyszewski, Jerzy Mokszyński and Eugeniusz Wierzbicki, who became famous for, among other things, the prestigious construction of Warsaw’s Party House

What distinguishes the building on Chopina Street? A characteristic element is its monumental form reminiscent of classicist townhouses. The basement is distinguished by deep rustication, and the centre of the façade is accentuated by a shallow risalit crowned with a tympanum with a bas-relief ornament in the form of a plant motif. The centrally located entrance is accessed by stairs on either side of a wide platform. It is faced in sandstone and decorated with a massive baluster balustrade. Since its construction, the building has not undergone any modernisation affecting its form

Over the years, as a result of moisture and urban pollution, the plasterwork, cornices and stone facing of the plinth have deteriorated. It is necessary to repair the plasterwork and renovate the stone elements on the façades,” reads a press release from the city’s conservation officer

A few years ago, a similar renovation was carried out on the neighbouring building at 5A Chopina Street, connected by an arcaded link leading to a common courtyard. Both houses form a unified complex. As a result, when the works are completed, we will be able to admire the renovated, entire frontage of Chopina Street from Dolinka Szwajcarska to Mokotowska Street
